Page 10 November 26, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE Chamber CEO from front page around children each day brought so much happiness into my life,” said Donna. Three years later Donna was recruited to be Development Director, Student Activities Director, and Pep Squad Moderator at Notre Dame. “This position was a little bit of everything I had done throughout my career, from working with students in ASB to fundraising. Pep squad moderator was a bit of a stretch,” chuckled Donna. But after seven years, the Duperrons moved from Corona to Torrance when Gary was recruited to teach and coach at North High. As soon as their three children became acclimated, Donna began volunteering, becoming active in community affairs. Donna is a past President of the Torrance Kiwanis Club, an office she held on two occasions. She is a certified member of Torrance CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). She is a member of the Pediatric Therapy Network Community Advisory Board. She serves as a Block Captain. And was a member of the Torrance Centennial Committee. In 1998, Donna looked for a job locally and, using her background as Activities and Development Directors, applied for a position as an Events Planner for the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. “Over the years, gradually, I became more involved in the day-to-day operations of the Chamber’s offices. Soon I was promoted to First Vice President of the Chamber. Then, five years ago, I was named as the President and CEO. There is a remarkable staff of six individuals, employed by the Chamber: Brandon Matson, Shatera Luna, Kelly Hernandez, Brandon Smith, Maria Applegate, and Terri Mamiya. Additionally, for the past six years, two volunteers, Pat Carnahan and Kay Brown, assist in the office. The staff and volunteers have fun, planning and working together. They all make coming to work each day a joy,” stated Donna. Donna is the immediate past Chair of the South Bay Association of Chambers of Commerce and is a Board member of the Southern California Association of Chamber Executives. Her daily activities begin each day at 6:30 a.m. when she opens the offices and starts to work on all the programs that the Chamber runs. She also makes a point to learn about and meet the entrepreneurs in the Torrance business community. Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce actively acts as a resource for the businesses that form the membership of nearly 800 businesses. The Chamber holds seminars in their expansive offices on Madrona Avenue in Torrance, diagonally across from the Torrance Civic Center. “It is important for this Chamber of Commerce to continue to be relevant in the community. I make it a point to visit, at a minimum, three of our member businesses each week. I interview the owner, president, CEO, or top management, advising of the resource the Chamber is for their business. The Chamber holds networking seminars, job fairs, as well as special events that cater to a specific sector of business, and assists with legislative matters that may affect our members. “The staff and I research what unique activities, programs, or events other Chambers are doing around the country. We brainstorm those ideas, determining if we should implement any in Torrance,” Donna continued. “One new program we are very proud of is ‘Educators in the Workplace.’ We worked closely with the Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) creating this program. Thirty selected staff members and faculty from TUSD will visit several Torrance businesses this school year. They will have the opportunity to see first-hand what the 21st century workplace looks like. Teachers can then speak to their students about jobs they can aspire to in the future,” Donna explained. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce holds 42 major events each year with 200 or more attendees. There are six monthly programs where members can hear about new business opportunities in the area, network with other business professionals, and develop partnerships to increase business. The Board of Directors are all volunteers from member businesses. Keeping the momentum of the Chamber continuous to grow the membership with new businesses; sustaining the relevancy of the Chamber of Commerce to the old business members; and retaining the 101-year heritage of Torrance as a business hub are over-arching goals of the Board. “The Chamber Board members are extremely supportive of the businesses and the staff members of the Chamber,” stated Donna. The relationship with the city of Torrance is also one that Donna Duperron maintains, as well as networking with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Donna knows to whom she must speak at City Hall for answers to questions her business members will have. The supportive City Council and staff at City Hall are openly available and make a point to attend as many Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce events as their schedules allow. The Chamber’s Government Affairs program, under the direction of Brandon Matson, allows Chamber members the opportunity to present issues that may affect their business. In the past three years, this Chamber program has grown and is popular among the membership. “I keep up with the trends for Chambers by attending the Western Association of Chambers of Commerce annual three-day conference. Once a week, or more, I attend webinars offered by the Southern California Association of Chambers of Commerce. My staff and I attend various educational seminars and forums throughout the year. We are always on the lookout for innovative ways to be relevant to our business members,” concluded the Chamber CEO. Donna Duperron is a major reason for the success of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce with her dedication, her panache, her innovative ideas, and her appreciation of the businesses in Torrance. She extends a capitalized Thank You to all for participating in the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. • C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s KEEP IT LOCAL NEW LOWER RATES! 26 weeks (6 months) is only $400 52 weeks (1 year) is only $750 If you have any questions call us at 310-322-1830.
