TORRANCE TRIBUNE November 8, 2012 Page 7 North Torrance wins League, Enters CIF Playoffs By Kelly Kemp The North Torrance Saxons Football Team, 8-2 (5-0), went four short years since its last Pioneer League Championship, but this was a sweet one indeed following a 54-0 drubbing of cross-town rival Torrance Tartars and an Undefeated League Title. The line of scrimmage was dominant, with excellent play on both sides of the ball from Anthony Ciomber, Joseph Franco, Java Maglasang, Juan Samiento and Luis Yepez. The Line stabilized both sides of the ball, especially protecting the receivers and running backs on the O-side. Backs T.J. Young and Corey Cox and Receivers Devante Jenkins and Michael Jurado all scored touchdowns, and, as has been the story all season long, key plays were initiated by Quarterback Jorge Hernandez. I personally came to witness the Hernandez- to-Jurado connection, since that’s what I’ve enjoyed reading about from past games in Daily Breeze journalist Tony Ciniglio’s articles – but what I saw was sheer skill and team greatness all around. Every time North Junior Running Back Adrian Colclasure tries to get around Torrance defender after receiving a pass from Quarterback Jorge Hernandez the Tartars double or triple-teamed Jurado, the other Ends and Backs were there to rise up, receive the pass and explode for yardage. My favorite play of the game caught me by surprise as much as it did Torrance! Midway through the second quarter, when the Saxons had just come off a touchdown march that had increased their lead from 13-0 to 21-0 (Adrian Colclasure caught the conversion from Hernandez), the Saxon kicker chipped a short on-sides attempt up the middle, and he was able to run the 10+ yards to jump on the ball! It was definitely not the routine “end-of-game on-sides kick” that we’re used to seeing teams go for in desperation, but it did send a resounding message of healthy risk taking along the Saxon sideline. North leads League #2 El Segundo, #3 Torrance and #At Large South Torrance into the Playoffs.
