Holly Avenue • El Segundo (Behind Walgreens and Chipotle off Sepulveda Blvd.) SPONSORED BY BRUINS OF THE SOUTH BAY BRUINSOFSOUTHBAY@GMAIL.COM Calendar of Events The Torrance Police Department has been awarded a $260,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic related deaths and injuries. The Torrance Police Department will use the funding as part of the city’s ongoing commitment to keep our roadways safe and improve the quality of life through both enforcement and education. After falling to a 10 year low in 2010, the number of persons killed has climbed nearly 17 percent across the state with 3,176 killed in 2015 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Particularly alarming is the six year rise in pedestrian and bicycle fatalities, along with the growing dangers of distracting technologies, and the emergence of drug-impaired driving as a major problem. This grant funding will provide opportunities to combat these and other devastating problems such as drunk driving, speeding and crashes at intersections. Provided by the Torrance Police Department. Torrance Education Foundation Awards $39,500 in STEM Grants to Teachers Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) announced it has awarded $39,500 in grants for STEM-related learning projects at Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) schools through its 3rd Annual round of STEM Initiative Grant Awards. 48 projects in District elementary, middle and high schools will take place in the 2016-2017 Academic Year, involving an estimated 6,000 students. Lead Teachers for each project will this week receive the grant awards through special access accounts at Torrance Unified School District (TUSD). Funds will be used to purchase materials and supplies for participatory projects focused on science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics, and for competition entry fees. Provided by the Torrance Education Foundation.
