Also recognized was the Torrance Education Foundation with an approved resolution by the board making November 2014 Torrance Education Foundation Month. In addition to notifying all schools in the district, it was asked that all “citizens and businesses be encouraged to join the Torrance Education Foundation for the betterment of our students.” Founded 22 years ago by parents, teachers, school administrators and community leaders to address the decline in state funding for the Torrance Unified School District, The Torrance Education Foundation (T.E.F.) has been dedicated to contributing to the city’s students and their educational experience. From the beginning TEF has raised more than $4 million for TUSD programs. Board Recognizes American Indian Heritage, TEF, California Sikh Americans Members of the Torrance School Board voted to proclaim the month of November 2014 as California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month throughout the Torrance Unified School District. All of the district’s schools will be notified of the upcoming month’s designation. The consent calendar item on the board’s agenda indicated that the California State Legislature recently took an action in order to call attention to the many and important contributions made by Sikh Americans to the state’s history. Hence, the state’s legislators declared November 2014 to be California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month. The agenda item also stated that a significant amount of Sikh immigrants have called California home for more than a century and it is believed that the first Sikh immigrants “labored on railroad construction projects, in lumber mills and in the agricultural heartlands of the Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Imperial Valleys.” It is currently estimated that 200,000 Americans of Sikh origin, which is almost 40 percent of the nation’s estimated Sikh population, live in the State of California. In honor of recognizing this segment of the state’s population, the California State Board of Education is encouraging all educational communities to “commemorate this time with appropriate commemorative exercises to promote awareness of the contributions of Sikh Americans in California’s history.” In addition Sikh Americans, the Torrance School Board recognized American Indians by also approving a resolution proclaiming November 2014 as American Indian Heritage Month. Earlier this year the California State Board of Education declared the November 2014 as American Indian Heritage Month.
