This day’s activities prepared teachers to measure and determine if students have met the expected results, by checking if the student has been understanding lessons as they are carried out. The third and final day consisted of breakout sessions where middle and high school teachers were grouped together, while elementary school teachers stayed among themselves, with both groups introduced to technology integration for student learning, special population considerations and conflict resolution [middle/high school only]. “You want to make sure that you know who your target is, how are you going to check that they have mastered the target and then look at how we are supporting our students,” Key said. “Whether language learners need help building their reading, writing and speaking skills to get to the required level; or how are we going to integrate technology resolution in the classroom from a student-to-student approach, as well as a student-to-teacher. Classroom management is also important in order to ensure a safe learning environment. “This is very methodical, structured and supportive, and it is about building those connections before the year begins and we can exchange content info and if they have questions, they can turn to the experts in the district,” Key said. The information shared at the Torrance Teacher Institute isn’t only based on a model and vision set by the district; rather, the standards are rigorously set to meet the requirements expected from the district both at the state and national level. Among those requirements are common core standards, which has been the most recent shift in public education. “The people that are leading these sessions are the same people doing the [common core] training; it’s the coaches,” Key said. “So nothing is a surprise; it is the same message that they are going to hear in the training and during the year.” In August of 2010, the California State Board of Education adopted its new K-12 California Common Core Standards for school districts across the state. The new standards are designed to provide a more detailed and accurate description of student achievement; as such, the new testing assessments are aligned with the states new content standards for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and math which are tailored to measure critical CLASSIFIEDS ADS in order to support them [students] in becoming 21st century savvy; and how are we going to support our special population students, socially and emotionally, so that we ensure that all legal aspects of their profiles are being supported.” The development also discusses conflict The deadline for classified copy and payment is NOON on Tuesday. This required science teachers to implement new science standards and to aid in the development of the new science curriculum framework. Much like ELA standards, NGSS required teachers to become less dependent on a memory-based curriculum. “It is a really exciting time for us in science because we have given the green light for our students to do science like real scientist do,” Science Resource Teacher Amy Argento said. “The previous standards were based on memorization. Now with the science and engineering practices that are attached to every standard, the students have to either analyze data, or argue from evidence based on the content that they are working with. This approach helps the student visualize and understand concepts based on real-world experiences.” However, this new approach not only requires that the students think about and approach education in a new light, it requires teachers to be fully prepared for this transition in education in order to better assist students to succeed. “We are all a product of our education. We have gone through the system as passive learners where we have gone through it by saying ‘you tell me what I need to know, I am going to memorize it and then check a box on a test,’” Argento said. “So it is difficult to become the facilitator instead of the teacher who holds all the knowledge, but as you become more used to doing it, you see the growth in the students and how much more valuable it is to them, and it makes you want to do more and you progress; it is growth in both student and teacher.” The collaboration between ELA, NGSS and all other components of education within the district is strong and has allowed teachers to better transition into the common core requirements, which has had an impact on the district’s students. “Even though we have other content areas, we are supporting all content because all of them work together to reach and support the students together,” Key said. “In order to get the students to get to the common core standards, you have to support them emotionally, make sure language learners are fine: everything is done to make sure they all get there.” • C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s CERTIFIED BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL (B&P) ADS CLASSIFIEDS ADS Six Months – $450 • One Year – $800 We will create your B&P ad for you, at no additional cost.
