TORRANCE TRIBUNE August 7, 2014 Page 7 One Man’s Opinion Another Man’s Opinion Political Academy Awards Differences Will Always Exist on Climate Change By Cristian Vasquez People need to stop denying that climate change is real. Really, it’s beginning to sound pathetic. Last week President Barack Obama’s administration and its supporters made an organized effort to put the spotlight on the issue of climate change, or global warming if you prefer. An article published by Politico. com on July 29 indicated that the White House released a report which stated that “inaction on climate change could come with a $150 billion someone left a car running inside an enclosed space. The carbon emissions would create an environment too toxic for any living being to be able to survive. Sure, the earth has ways of filtering and cleaning out those greenhouse emissions; however, if we continue to deplete vegetation such as our rain forests while emitting indiscriminate amounts of carbon dioxide, we are making ourselves vulnerable to turning the earth into an enclosed space that will become too toxic for any of use to survive. “inaction on climate change could come with a $150 billion price tag.” By Gerry Chong Each year the Academy Awards honors those who entertained us in the preceding year. Sometimes they made us laugh and sometimes cry -- often at the same time. With that as its heritage, it would seem the Academy should create a special category for politicians who have reached their comedic pinnacle. Unfortunately, while most other categories deal in fiction, this award would represent surreal life. This first year’s nominees should be: Nominee #1: Senator Harry Reid, who emphatically exclaimed, “Our borders are secure!” Nominee #2: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Acknowledging the claim that most Children’s Crusaders come from societies rife with shootings, killings, gangs, drugs and political corruption, the Mayor said he would welcome 1,000 of them to Chicago, America’s murder capital. Evidently Emanuel wants to introduce Central American victims to the eye-popping Chicago way, proving criminality supersedes borders and culture. Nominee #3: President Barack Obama (of course). While anti-Americanism runs rampant throughout the Middle East, on July 29 the President issued a statement “honoring the contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.” Nominee #4: Michelle Obama. On July 24, in a speech before a Democratic audience, Obama urged them to “dig deep into their pockets and write a big fat check” before the midterm elections. Later in the same speech, as the President crisscrossed the country on his price tag.” At the same time it was reported that a number of lawmakers, activists and business leaders gathered in Atlanta, Denver and Washington on day one of the EPA’s long session of public hearings considering proposed climate rule for power plants. It is no surprise that there is a tendency by conservative leaders to discredit the arguments warning people about climate change. Such is the resistance by conservative-leaning groups against climate change that they spend millions of dollars a year trying to discredit the science to prove that these environmental changes are occurring. While I can understand that there can be a disagreement about the rate that climate change is affecting the environment, to deny that human activities do not affect the earth is simply foolish. The amount of gas we use, trash that we produce and trees that we destroy will accelerate the process by which the earth experiences its own natural climate shifts. To use a simple but crude example, consider what would happen if Maybe I am too naïve and have a hard time understanding the negative aspects of taking the necessary steps to prevent the depletion of the earth’s ability to self cleanse. Recycling, using less water, transitioning to more sustainable energy and preserving our natural resources is simply not a bad thing. Maybe if we explain it in terms that these conservative groups would better understand the dangers of not being proactive on board with simply leading a cleaner, more energy-efficient lifestyle. So far nobody seems to have figured out a way to explain to the naysayers that despite the earth’s natural process of climate change, that human interaction does affect this process. It makes no sense that conservatives, who pride themselves with being fiscally responsible, can’t apply that same logic to the earth’s resources. Unlike money, which can be lost but regained, if we completely deplete our natural resources we will leave this earth and ourselves in a world of irreversible hurt. • 12th fund raising trip this month, she deplored the role of big money in American politics. Nominee #5: President Barack Obama (again). Empathizing with the thousands of youngsters who made their way from Honduras to the U.S. border, he suggested that perhaps we should start an airlift, bringing them in greater comfort to our country. Not only the children, but their families, could be flown to the U.S. if they meet the following criteria: “If they were persecuted because of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, and membership in a particular political group.” In other words, almost any Honduran would qualify for admission to the U.S. As of 2010, the UN stated there were 7,621,000 Hondurans, of which 2,801,000 were under the age of 14. A successful U.S. airlift could empty out that country, relocating one and all to the land of free stuff. All the inherent social and economic ramifications aside, if Hondurans are first, could others be far behind? Nominee #5: The Democratic Party. It favors hiring legal counsel for every youngster who breached our borders, contesting any deportation action. So far, that’s 57,000 legal actions; but the Border Patrol is expecting this year’s total to reach 90,000. Next year is projected to be 130,000-140,000. Each deportation hearing would take years to resolve, resulting in a de facto legitimizing of illegal immigration, and the creation of the Attorney-full-employment-act. Nominee #6: President Obama (still again). On July 28, he closed the American Embassy in Libya, years too late. And so in the dark of the theater, the tensions grow as Academy members cast their ballots . . . and the winner is:• Looking for the Torrance Tribune?
