It helps guide you, develops working skills and expose you to a career that otherwise you might not have know about,” said Furey. “You might not know it today, but you may think back on this as ... a program that helped you do what you’ll be doing in the future.” The focus of the program is to provide firsthand knowledge about work place behaviors, career development techniques and job readiness skills. While some of the lessons might not be new for the students, seeing them play out outside of the classroom is important according to public and government affairs advisor Barbara Graham. “While we can teach good work habits in theory, it’s really learned on the job,” said Graham. Beyond just teaching these students how to behave in a professional setting, volunteers seek to build the students’ interest in a future STEM-related career by mentoring them and assisting them with an interactive STEM project. This incorporates not only engineering concepts but also teamwork, leadership, communication, analytical and conceptual thinking, project management and safety, similar to a major project in the real world. This wasn’t always part of the program, Graham said, but the program has grown since its inception and the importance of STEM education is now a major part of what students learn. “Over the last three years the program has really evolved and the importance of STEM Students who spent their summer learning job skills and engineering skills from the Youth Development Program set their final project, a Rube Goldberg or chain reaction machine, in motion. Photo by Dylan Little. education has really played a focal point in this program,” said Graham. “We wanted to introduce STEM components to enhance the existing educational components in the work skills and the work place readiness that was already part of the program.” Before the students showed off their final project, a Rube Goldberg machine that uses a 40-step chain reaction to crush a can, a couple students shared their experiences in the program. Noah Choi said he was aware that the greatest lesson they learned wasn’t necessarily the technical skills he learned but the knowledge of what it takes to make it as an engineer for a cutting edge tech company. “All our mentors provided us with invaluable knowledge,” said Choi. “Learning how to wire an electrical circuit is one thing, but hearing their life story and what they’ve done to become what they are today is knowledge we couldn’t have found anywhere else.” YDP volunteer Heather Brooke said before the luncheon she reached out to students from past years to hear how the skills they learned have served them after high school. Brooke said she was happy to learn that many respondents cited how even basic tips like how to make a good first impression have served them well. “To hear them still talk about those things and cite specific examples of things we talked about just tell me . . . that we did something right,” said Brooke. “It really is beneficial.” The ExxonMobil Foundation has granted more than $1.7 million to employ nearly 800 Torrance students since 1990. Torrance Unified School District Superintendent George Mannon said that it takes the school district, the city and the private sector working together to make a community successful.
