Hattori will compete in the 2015 World Yo-Yo Contest in Tokyo in from Aug. 13-17 before beginning his college years at the MIT campus. Photo by Linda Hattori. Math Club Member, and Board Member of the Teen Advisory Council as well as being part of the marching band and concert band. “Alex is well known in Torrance for his mentoring and fundraising efforts,” Mayor Furey said. “He volunteers his times and yo-yo talents though performing charitable events and education. He has performed at fundraisers for charities like the American Cancer Society and The Pediatric Therapy Network. This year was also Alex’s fifth year performing at the Rock Around the Block summer event where he taught kids and adults alike how to use the yo-yo, including the mayor.” In order to compete at the national and international competitions, Hattori has had to fundraise since he was 12 years old. Last summer he toured Europe with his yo-yos from Prague to London and is looking forward to the competition in Tokyo, for which he is still fundraising. The certificate presented to him recognized and displayed the city’s appreciation for his volunteer efforts and contributions to the community. “Obviously the certificate doesn’t have enough space to list everything you have accomplished but we are very proud of you,” Mayor Furey said. To help Hattori fundraise for the Tokyo competition, persons interested can donate at http://www.gofundme.com/yoyoalex and learn more about his upcoming event, as well as watch videos of his past performances. “I’d like to thank the entire Torrance Community for shaping who I am today,” Hattori said. “If it weren’t for my teachers and mentors and classmates and family members, I would not be where I am today.” •
