Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Kemp doesn’t see things the way the stats show them or the way managers Don Mattingly sees them. Recently moved to left field, Kemp misses the old days and wants to relive them as an everyday center fielder. “Whatever they want to do, we’re favorable to,” Kemp’s agent Dave Stewart told Foxsports.com. “As long as it gives him an opportunity to play every day. He’d like to eventually go back to center field. He’s not opposed to right or left, but his hope at some point is to get back to center.” Unfortunately for Kemp, it doesn’t look like a move from left to center field would be in the best interest of the club. With numerous errors in center after he returned from injury earlier in the season and a clear deterioration in speed, it looks as if his days as the captain of the outfield at Chavez Ravine are all but over. The Dodgers outfield is crowded as is: with Kemp, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig and even Scott Van Slyke, who has been one of the Dodgers best hitters when he has gotten time at the plate, Mattingly has had to do some juggling with the lineups. Early in spring training, Kemp declared, “I’m not a fourth outfielder. We can cut that off right there. I won’t accept that role.” Unfortunately for Kemp, it looks like he’s going to have to if he wants to remain a Dodger. Trading Kemp would be in the best interest of both parties involved. The Dodgers are already going to have to eat a large portion of his contract ($107 million remaining from 2015-’19), but getting rid of him and even Crawford and Ethier by the trade deadline would make this club that much better. With Van Slyke waiting in the wings and Joc Pederson tearing up the minor leagues, Kemp’s .266 average, Ethier’s .250 average, and inability to hit anyone throwing with their left hand, and Crawford’s .259 average clearly become expendable. The Dodgers should be looking to get younger and better if they want to win a World Series. Kemp (and even Ethier and Crawford) is heading in the complete opposite direction. Pederson, a true center fielder, would bring his .326 average, 18 home runs and 46 RBIs this year in the Dodgers AAA Albuquerque affiliate and fit in very nicely with Puig in right field and may even provide a spark for the ball club similar to the one that Puig provided last year. Put Van Slyke in left and the Dodgers immediately get younger and more dangerous. It may be hard to let go of Kemp, especially when he has the potential to be the player he was in 2011. That player, though, is all but gone. Of course, for Kemp, it may be basically impossible to admit that he’s not the player that he once was. The Dodgers, should learn something from their neighbors at the Staples Center who waited a little too long to get something back for Pau Gasol, who is now gone. Trade Kemp now and get assets back while his stock is still somewhat high. If the Dodgers want to win a ring, they may just have to begin making bold moves of that sort. • Up and Adam from page 6 Reports note that most concussion symptoms disappear within two weeks, but 10 to 20 percent of concussion sufferers who will experience symptoms anywhere from weeks to months to years later. Obviously, concussions are difficult things to understand and there is new and more valuable information coming out on almost a daily basis. Robert Graham, chair of the committee and director of the national program office for Aligning Forces for Quality at George Washington University put it plainly when he stated, “The findings of our report justify the concerns about sports concussions in young people. However, there are numerous areas in which we need more and better data.” Until that time comes, it is important to keep a close eye on any players playing the sport for their own health and safety and to make informed decisions about when it is okay to participate in specific sports. So what can be done right now about concussions in high school sports? Of course there is always new, cutting-edge helmet technology coming out, but even that isn’t sure to prevent concussions altogether. Naturally, the helmet must fit correctly too. If it doesn’t, there is almost no point in wearing it. Most of all, however, the best way to prevent a concussion is to be coached properly. Practices, even in the NFL, are gearing more and more towards non-contact drills. Coaches should teach players to not lead with their heads as the primary focal point of contact. Mouth guards should always be used and major time should be spent on proper tackling techniques. If the players who play the game and the coaches who coach it stick to a few simple rules and good techniques, then the game will be much safer to play.
