EL SEGUNDO HERALD July 21, 2016 Page 7 TerriAnn in Torrance Rock Around the Block in Torrance By TerriAnn Ferren Today, Thursday, July 21, from 5 to 8 p.m., the 12th Annual Rock Around the Block, celebrating the All American City Award presented to the city of Torrance in 1956, will take place at the Torrance Historical Society at 1345 Post Avenue. Spearheaded by the Torrance Old postcard provided by the Torrance Historical Society. Historical Society, in partnership with the city of Torrance, CitiCABLE 3, Torrance Bakery, and the Old Torrance Neighborhood Association the event has grown substantially through the years. Toyota Motor Sales USA sponsors this free, fun event. A blocked off Post Avenue from Cravens to Sartori, provides lots of space for the classic car show. So grab your poodle skirt, roll up your jeans, swing your fuzzy dice, and cruise on down to downtown Torrance. “When we first started, we were hoping to get a crowd of at least 250 people and we had at least 500, and it has just kept growing and each year we get over 1,000 people in attendance, because it is just that fun,” said Torrance Historical Society Board Member Debbie Hays, Vice President in charge of fundraising. It is a great family event. People stroll the streets, and view vintage automobiles on display from the Crusin’ 50’s Car Club, Model A Car Club, Touring A’s, and local classic car owners, all organized by Carl Kaemerle. And don’t forget to, snap a ‘selfie’ next to the famous Wienermobile and the bust of our founder, Jared Sidney Torrance. Debbie also informed me, “It has turned into a well-oiled machine and it takes lots and lots of volunteers to pull it off. Everybody is wonderful and eager to participate and help. We will have a bubble gum blowing contest, hula-hoop contest, cake-walk, and a pie eating contest, sponsored by our favorite, Torrance Bakery,” said Debbie. And don’t forget to paint your very own pet rock at the pet rock station or try your luck at the dime toss. The Fire Department will be on hand, offering/demonstrating CPR training to the tune of “Staying Alive”. Look out John Travolta! And In-N-Out Burger will once again serve burgers with all the trimmings, just as they have for all 12 years. “They are awesome to work with,” added Debbie. “Simultaneously, with all the events happening in the streets, the Bartlett Senior Center will hold an Open House, offering participants free entertainment while they munch their burgers. The South Bay Strummers, (a ukulele group), and the Liz Holmes Retro Swing Band, who recently entertained at the Annual Senior Senior Prom, [See Torrance Tribune, April 21, 2016] will be entertaining inside the Bartlett Senior Center. “There is entertainment going on everywhere you walk,” said Debbie. The Torrelle’s, a group of city employees who sing 50s and 60s songs a cappella, will stroll amongst the crowds, as Alex Hattori, 3-time US National Champion, and currently 2nd Place World Yo-Yo champ, demonstrates his skill on stage. The other night I caught up with the Torrelle’s during one of their rehearsals for Rock Around the Block in the employee break room. Leader of the group, Linda Cessna smiled broadly as she told me, “We are awesome! Miriam Dowdy originally got the group together many years ago. She thought the upcoming Torrance Employee Variety Show needed a ‘girl’ group. Then, Miriam left the group, and somehow I was dubbed leader.” Torrelle member, Elizabeth Pose said, “Rock Around the Block is very fun. The community comes out – it is all 50s style, which I, personally love, and the car show brings a lot of people out – not just in our community but in surrounding communities too. It is a lot of fun.” Downtown truly comes alive with hundreds of people streaming into the heart of Torrance. Restaurants in the city’s old downtown fill up, including The Depot, Foster’s Freeze, Red Car Brewery, Tortilla Cantina, and many others. It’s your chance for walking the streets, saying hello to neighbors, and having some good old-fashioned summertime fun. Want more information on the festivities? Call 310-328-5392 or visit www.Torrance- HistoricalSociety.org. Also, make sure and mark your calendar for next year, Jan. 26, 2017. That date marks what would have been Louis Zamperini’s 100th birthday! Our own Historical Society houses the largest collection of Louis Zamperini memorabilia in the world. If you haven’t viewed the priceless collection of this American hero housed right in downtown Torrance, make sure and check it out soon. With all the festivities happening within Torrance, I would be remiss if I didn’t share the news about Torrance High School also celebrating its centennial September 11, 2017. In celebration of this event, bricks for the centennial walkway, which will be located directly in front of the main gym, are now on sale.
