Although no community is exempt from this type of tragedy, we take pride in Torrance knowing our training, standards, and leadership are on the cutting edge of our profession. We appreciate the support of our city leaders and especially from the citizens we serve. Over the past few days, our men and women have been touched with an outpouring of support from the Torrance community. Officers have been the recipients of hugs and thanks from citizens in disbelief at what is occurring across our country. They have brought in flowers, food, and offered their emotional support and gratitude for the officers who serve them daily. Notes of encouragement have been left on their police units. On behalf of the men and women of the Torrance Police Department, I would like to thank our citizens and members of our business community for their outpouring of love and thanks during this very difficult time. We both welcome and appreciate it. Working together we can make a difference.” – Mark A. Matsuda Chief of Police, Torrance Police Department • Friday Partly Cloudy 75˚/63˚ Saturday Partly Cloudy 74˚/63˚ Sunday Partly Cloudy 75˚/63˚ Election Results Consolidated, Officials Sworn Into Office By Cristian Vasquez Torrance Mayor Patrick J. Furey and the members of the Torrance City Council approved City Clerk Rebecca Poirier’s recommendation of adopting a resolution to consolidate the results of the June 7 general municipal election. Poirier also conducted the Oath of Office for the three “duly elected officeholders” Councilman Mike Griffiths, Councilman Geoff Rizzo and Councilman Milton Herring. “It is a humbling experience; I work hard to understand the community, to listen to the community and understand what their concerns are,” Councilman Rizzo said. “Hopefully in my decisions, in listening to the community, I make decisions that are in the best interest of the community because that is the bottom line when I make a decision. I’m humbled that the community can recognize that I have given things thought and that I don’t take my decisions lightly.” Councilman Herring will be serving his first term as an elected member of the council, while Councilmen Rizzo and Griffiths both ran successful reelection campaigns for another term in office. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank primarily the residents of Torrance for putting their faith in me to serve as their city councilman for the next four years,” Councilman Griffiths said. “It is quite an honor and I am humbled by the actions of the resident of the city. I am honored to be here.” Councilman Herring earned the most votes, 13,789, while Councilman Rizzo tallied 13,472 votes and Councilman Griffiths received 12,880 votes. The three councilmembers beat out candidates Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino with 9,783 votes, Genghmun Eng with 9,666 votes and Asam Sheikh with 5,448 votes. Councilman Herring is planning to use his time on the council as an opportunity to contribute to the growth the city. “Jared Sydney Torrance had a dream of a balanced city: commercial, industrial and residential,” Councilman Herring said after taking his Oath of Office. “In making that dream a reality he collaborated with some of the brightest minds to help layout a beautiful city. In 2012, Torrance celebrated it centennial with the theme of ‘Looking Back and Moving Forward.’ Whenever I visit the Torrance Historical Society Museum, I am inspired as I look around and see the pictures on the wall of the great contributions that men and women who have gone on before me have dedicated themselves to in making this city the great city that it is. I am proud of to be a part of fashioning our fantastic future.” Also part of the meeting’s activities was saying goodbye to retiring Councilman Gene Barnett, who has been a member of the Torrance City Council since June of 2007. “This marks the conclusion of my nine years as member of the Torrance City Council,” See City Council, page 2
