TORRANCE TRIBUNE July 3, 2014 Page 7 One Man’s Opinion Another Man’s Opinion By Gerry Chong The old crone was a bent-over, skinny hag, missing teeth and dressed in a frayed gypsy dress. With gnarled fingers she beckoned one and all to come into her tent to see the future, if they dared. A curious passerby responded to her challenge, saying, “If you tell me something I don’t know, I’ll double your fee.” And so the session began: “The reign of Barack Obama has already ended. The disasters of Benghazi, IRS, VA, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Syria, Obamacare, illegal “Now then, to win the presidency, Hillary will have to disavow this extremely unpopular president and his policies.” immigration, and the economy have combined to end any belief that the President can lead. In fact, an NBC poll showed 54% of the public believe the President can no longer do the job. Currently, the New York Times poll shows the President’s approval at a negative 40-54. It’s already over.” “Well, that’s fine,” said the client, “but that’s not a prediction. Tell me about the future.” “The future, you say. Very well. The president’s political demise will result in Republican control over both houses of Congress in the 2014 election. Furthermore, John Boehner has promised to file a suit on behalf of the House contesting Obama’s exercise of Presidential edicts in violation of the Constitution. With both hands and feet thus bound, the President might just as well go back to playing golf and vacationing.” “Now then, to win the presidency, Hillary will have to disavow this extremely unpopular president and his policies. In his new book Blood Feud: The Clintons vs. the Obamas, Edward Klein points out that Obama reneged on his promise to support Hillary in 2016 in exchange for Bill’s support for Obama’s reelection in 2012. Further, Obama set Hillary up to take the fall for the fiasco at Benghazi. Klein quotes a furious Bill Clinton thusly, “We’ve got to list all the situations that Obama’s screwed up, Benghazi, the IRS, healthcare, you name it. We’ve got to explain how you would do everything different and better. It has to be made crystal clear that you understand Obama’s mistakes and would never have made them yourself. You’ve got to hit hard at the Obama record. You’ve got to be very specific. Your administration would be a third Clinton term, not a third Obama term. We have to be very harsh because voters are turning on him like a bad dog, and we have to do the same.” Hillary enjoined, “The minute we do as you say, and attack Obama, we’ve severed all ties to him. It’ll make Obama furious and he’ll throw his support to Biden or God knows who. He would never forgive me.” “Who cares,” Bill said, “In a few months he’ll have no more @&#!! political capital left. I don’t give a #$%! who he supports . . . .” So concluded the crone, “The Liberalism of Obama will be attacked by their nominee, creating an internecine war dividing Democrats and electing a Republican president.” Have I not foretold the future?” With that, the fortune-teller’s customer paid double. • Boehner’s Lawsuit Against Obama Just Another Waste of Tax Money By Cristian Vasquez When House Speaker John Boehner threatened to sue President Barack Obama for his excessive use of executive power, I couldn’t help but shake my head and be further convinced of the temper tantrum that the GOP has been throwing in the political arena since losing the White House in 2008. So to hear last week that Boehner was actually filing the lawsuit and moving forward with his mission to smear President Obama’s reputation made my head hurt. Boehner’s lawsuit is a waste of taxpayer dollars and for a member of the party claiming to want to end irresponsible spending, this lawsuit isn’t a good start. The truth is that Boehner and every other member of the GOP are simply running out of ways to smear President Obama’s name. The ridiculous thing is that there are plenty of issues and actions that can be use to criticize and attack the President’s reputation. If Boehner is convinced that suing President Obama for eroding “the power of the legislative branch” through his use of executive actions, then why not take action against the past four presidents as well? We can dig through the record of each Commander in Chief during the past 25 years and find all sorts of reasons to file suit. Sure, Boehner wasn’t around during the above-mentioned administrations and he can only act based on the circumstances that he finds himself in at the moment. Still, I would like to know what will this lawsuit accomplish? Aside from wasting money, time and causing a media circus, there is little, if any benefit to anyone through this lawsuit. The National Archives show that from 2009 to present, President Obama has issued 172 executive orders. While that might seem like a lot, it’s not worthy of a lawsuit, especially when you consider that President George W. Bush issued 291 executive orders during his two terms. The National Archives also lists that President William Clinton issued 364 executive orders; President George Bush, in one term, issued 166 executive orders, while President Ronald Reagan signed off on such orders 381 times. While members of the GOP have been appalled by the president’s “overreaching” action for months, Boehner using taxpayer money to satisfy a political coup is what’s really disturbing. Boehner can claim that this lawsuit isn’t a political move to rally the base against the President and his struggling party, but the timing of this lawsuit reeks of some pre-election PR move. Since President Obama blatantly said during his State of the Union speech in January that he would no longer wait on Congress and would instead resort to the “pen” for executive orders, a lawsuit is a stretch, and a waste of time and money. Boehner and his cronies need to accept that they failed to make President Obama a one-term president and be satisfied that they derailed a lot of the social programs that the president wanted to implement. If we are going to start filing lawsuits against presidents for eroding “the power of the legislative branch” then let’s start lining up every living president to make them accountable. Yet again, accountability isn’t really Boehner’s and the GOP’s strongest quality as of late. • Looking for the Torrance Tribune?
