Omar Navarro: Answer not submitted by deadline. Clint Andrew Paulson: Supporting our police and fire is something all the candidates agree on.  Everyone wants the best when it comes to our public safety employees and I want to ensure we maintain a competitive workforce as well. To do so, however, we need to start being more disciplined in how we manage our budget.  With an increase in residential burglaries, not to mention the many other needs we have within the city, I’m not sure that building a $4 Million dollar soccer complex on a leased piece of property whose term expires in 5 years should be at the top of our priority list.  In the last few weeks alone, there has also been a lot of money wasted on the unnecessary imposition of street sweeping signs and paying for putting up 300 AYSO banners on city streetlights.  We need to fix our spending priorities.   Geoffrey Rizzo: I would support these departments by ensuring that the city offers competitive pay and benefits the will allow them to hire and retain the highest level of police officers and firefighters.  I would also ensure that they have the necessary equipment and training to get the job done. Alex M. See: Our city’s public safety officials are charged with the most important role of keeping our residents and businesses safe. I will make sure that we have the resources to retain and recruit the best talent and provide the most modern training tools on the market.   I will work with the new police and fire chief to create a city plan and identify the areas that we need to focus on and preserve our status as the 10th Safest City in California.   Norm “Opa” Segal: I believe that the principal function of local government is to provide for the safety of its citizens.  Everything else comes after this as funds are available.  By safety, I mean that the people are protected from each other and from the acts of nature.  Police and Firefighters are  our first line of defense for the above. I want our Police and Fire Departments to continue to be ranked at or near the best in the Nation.  I want them to have the most modern equipment available.  I want them to have the best training so as to protect them as well as our citizens.   We must assure that they go home each night uninjured.  I also want to make sure that they have a pension plan that will be there when they retire.  This may required modifications to their present plans.  A plan that will not be there is not a plan that anyone would want. Charlotte Ann Svolos: Our Police and Fire personnel are some of the best and brightest. We have and should continue to keep high standards for selecting them. I have attended our Open House events for the Fire the past couple of years. I attended briefings by Chief Neu about realignment and the unique investigative training we give our uniformed officers.  If elected, I would ensure correct staffing ratios. If it’s more responsible to hire than to require overtime to get the job done, then we should do so. I would work with departments in determining needs while considering cost. It’s a balancing act to keep cost and public safety in equilibrium. We all want a safe city and these individuals make it happen. The delicate issue here is how we address our retirement obligations with these individuals. We need to work together with creative solutions such as replacing longevity bonuses with early retirement incentives. We structure replacement of individuals on the old plans to employees on new plans, who contribute, so that we balance our responsibility to the public with our desire to thank the men and women who serve. John Paul Tabakian: Endorsements from the police and fire department unions do not equate to supporting police and fire personnel. These public employee unions are asking candidates to sacrifice safety protections for current personnel, by maintaining unfunded pension and benefit liabilities for legacy employees. These union bosses are living in fantasyland, if they believe that Torrance can continue to pay the entire pension contributions for legacy employees. New employees have to contribute a small percentage towards their pensions, while legacy employees do not. Voters need to ask themselves three questions: (1) Do you have to contribute towards your own pension? (2) Do you want your city to go bankrupt? (3) When are voters in this city and state going to stop the madness? I do not agree that our city should sacrifice its financial security, in order to recruit and maintain the best police and fire personnel. The notion that Torrance must pay the most outrageous salary and benefit packages, is an insult to those safety personnel who live in our city, but work in surrounding communities. Big union bosses are acting like mafia hoods demanding protection money. Kurt Weideman: For over 50 years in Torrance my family and I have benefited by and appreciated the protection and safety provided by our Police and Fire Departments. Torrance enjoys its high safety ratings (i.e. Class 1 Fire Department, Top Ten in the USA for Public Safety) because the residents insist on the “best”. Our Public Safety Departments (Police and Fire) make the real contribution to these ratings, but this only comes about through a combination of many factors, including strict hiring practices, constant training, and up-to-date equipment. Yes, this costs money, but while making tough decisions I never forget those brave guardians who put there life on the line for all of us. Torrance has excellent Police and Fire Departments and our task is to make sure they get the support and equipment needed. – Thank you Candidates! • 3400 BLOCK CARSON ST Suspect(s) pries door handles for entry and takes property from two victims’ vehicles/backpack, laptop, mouse, paperwork, ID, sunglasses case, backpack, headphones, ID Burglary-Commercial 4/18/2014 4:00:00 AM 24200 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) pries open door for entry, ransacks and takes property/ computer, monitor, hard drive, documents, printer, fax machine, business cards, TV, cash Burglary-Commercial 4/17/2014 4:55 PM 20400 BLOCK VICTOR ST Suspect(s) enters multiple classrooms by unknown means, damages a computer and takes property/ food, calculators, clock radio Theft 4/17/2014 7:30:00 PM 4100 BLOCK PACIFIC COAST HWY Suspect(s) defeats lock securing property and takes same/ bicycle Burglary-Auto 4/19/2014 12:00:00 PM 21300 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) enters vehicle by unknown means and takes property/ cell phone, sunglasses, garage remote Auto Theft 4/17/2014 1:52:00 PM 3500 BLOCK CARSON ST Stolen vehicle: ‘03 Cadillac Escalade Theft 4/17/2014 9:37 AM 24500 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) takes victim’s vehicle’s catalytic converter Auto Theft 4/17/2014 2:45:00 PM 1700 BLOCK CARSON ST Stolen vehicle: ‘03 Chevrolet Suburban Battery-Simple 4/16/2014 10:35:00 PM 3300 BLOCK LOMITA BLVD Suspect repeatedly punches victim in the face Burglary-Auto 4/16/2014 10:00:00 PM 2200 BLOCK CARSON ST Suspect(s) bypasses door lock, ransacks and takes property/ backpack, bag, laptops, chargers, cash, bank cards, headphones, sunglasses, jacket, watch, passport Battery-Simple 4/16/2014 6:30:00 PM 4800 BLOCK PACIFIC COAST HWY Suspect slaps victim in the face Theft 4/17/2014 12:00:00 PM 5800 BLOCK PACIFIC COAST HWY Suspect(s) takes unsecured property from parking structure/ bicycles Battery-Simple 4/16/2014 2:45:00 AM 4000 BLOCK 226TH ST Suspect charges at victim, pushes her and repeatedly punches her in the face and head Theft 4/15/2014 10:00:00 PM 16800 BLOCK ELGAR AVE Suspect(s) takes property from victim’s residence without permission while there with permission/ wallet Battery-Simple 4/15/2014 7:32 PM 3700 BLOCK ARTESIA BLVD Suspect kicks victim and headbutts her Theft 4/15/2014 7:00:00 PM 21700 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) takes property from ATM counter while victim is distracted/ wallet Burglary-Residential 4/14/2014 11:16 PM 3600 BLOCK FASHION WAY Suspect(s) enters victims’ hotel room by unknown means, ransacks and takes property/ camera, wallet, chargers, purse Burglary-Auto 4/14/2014 6:35:00 PM 4100 BLOCK HICKMAN DR Suspect attempts to enter victim’s vehicle via a partially open window, but flees without taking any property when interrupted by a witness Burglary-Commercial 4/15/2014 5:45:00 AM 3700 BLOCK LOMITA BLVD Suspect(s) pries open storage shed/ unknown if property loss at time of report Theft 4/14/2014 4:05:00 PM 3500 BLOCK CARSON ST Suspect(s) takes property from victim’s bag as she changes in locker room/ purse Vandalism 4/13/2014 11:38:48 PM 1800 BLOCK 220TH ST Suspect(s) tags window and sign with blue ink Burglary-Commercial 4/13/2014 7:00:00 PM 2600 BLOCK SKYPARK DR Suspect(s) pries open storage unit lock and takes property/used car batteries Vandalism 4/13/2014 11:00:00 PM 23800 BLOCK ARLINGTON AVE Suspect(s) smears caulking on victim’s parked motorcycle Theft 4/20/2014 1:00:00 PM 4800 BLOCK CARMELYNN ST Suspect(s) takes property from backyard/ propane BBQ •
