Page 14 May 1, 2014 TORRANCE TRIBUNE TerriAnn Ferren from page 10 lot of articles written about them in the paper, and they don’t hear their names mentioned in the news but they get rewarded with the smiles on the children’s faces and it takes a lot of hard work – a lot of dedication in order to accomplish some of the smallest tasks but it is very rewarding opportunity for them.” Rosalinda Garcia described herself to me as “Chief Programs Officer and proud mother of a Junior Ambassador. My son is Andrew Garcia. [He is 16 years old and a client at PTN since he was 4 and he stayed there until he was about 12 ‘cuz he got too big for the equipment and he had met his needs and he is now a sophomore at Redondo Union High School in the Junior ROTC Program there having great success.” Rosalinda explained to me that her son, Andrew admires his dad, who is a marine and Andrew helps out now at PTN as a ‘white shirt’ during Camp Escapades and one of the volunteers who work with the younger ones with social skills. It is a great way for Andrew to give back. Not long after speaking with Rosalinda, I met her son, Andrew Garcia, and found out why she was so proud of him. Andrew Garcia is an articulate, handsome young man who was more than happy to speak with me. “I am 16 this year and what I do is represent PTN. I started when I was little, now I work with the younger kids in Leaps and Bounds, I work with all the kids that have disabilities. I am a tenth grader at Redondo High and I got myself involved with the USMC program there and am an assistant officer and help the kids, the incoming freshman. I have gone to orientation; I have spoken to the incoming freshman and am part of the leadership group in my school which is great. A great opportunity. My dad [Alfred] served our country so I take part in that,” beamed Andrew. Before the entertainment began, Kurt Rambis spoke to the guests and said, “I have been involved with Pediatric Therapy Network for 15 years when I was invited into the clinic and that following summer to Camp Escapades, to watch what goes on in the clinic and see how much joy and fun the kids had at Camp Escapades. I do not know how anybody could not get involved. The physical therapists, the occupational therapists, speech therapists do a fantastic job working with kids and being around athletes my entire life and seeing rewards from hard work and effort – there is nobody that puts more effort, more work in doing some of the smallest little things that we all take for granted on a daily basis and the therapists are to be applauded every single day, the students, the children with special needs, the effort they put into it, it’s phenomenal. It is a joy to watch and their strength and determination should be an inspiration to all of us.” Then I asked Linda Rambis about how she feels about PTN and she told me, “When we first started with PTN many, many years ago one of our most touching moments came when my children who were camp counselor volunteers with the young people – how they would come back feeling from the camp and how impressed they were and how hard the kids worked and how much fun it was to be with them and how the effort they put in to get a basket or just the activities that were all based for the children there really made them appreciate the services that are provided and the blessings that they have and it pushed them to want to give more and do more in the community and that is what it’s all about.” Then we made our way to the large salon to be entertained by some of the finest talent around. First, aspiring musician Grant Acker was introduced by his mom who explained how Grant has risen above his multiple challenges and now is a senior at Mira Costa High School. His piano playing is the outlet Grant chose and what a lucky thing for us: he is truly gifted. Grant played two selections on the piano; “He’s a Pirate” and “Attack on the Titans.” Then vocalist Heather MacPhee delighted everyone with her renditions of “Let it Go” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” Heather is from Torrance, performs with Encore Entertainers, and will play Elf in Shrek, the Musical this June. Heather brought the house down with a rendition Barbra Streisand would now envy. Earlier in the afternoon, Heather told me, “Honestly, I haven’t had this much experience. It is my first solo performance, my first gig so I am a little … it’s really nice.” Oh, Heather, if this is nervous – watch out world! A special performance by David Benoit, threetime Grammy-nominee and conductor of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra rounded out the evening. As I left this incredible event I was thankful - thankful for the opportunity to meet wonderful artists and performers. From the young novices just starting out to the quintessential professional in David Benoit, the entire afternoon was inspiring. Clearly, Pediatric Therapy Network holds every child in their hands with not only care but encouragement for succeeding beyond what anyone might expect.
