With such symptoms it becomes a bigger challenge for children to learn. “When I tell parents that story, their eyes get welled up because they can all relate that it could be them; it could be any of us,” Fisher said. “We can all lose our jobs or lose our homes. When you think about it the kids that are hungry, cognitively can’t think and it truly impacts their lives forever.” Fisher is committed to using her platform as a local business owner to address and act on an issue that exist in Torrance. “For me, we provide a service to the community by providing affordable clothes for children, toys, and equipment that will help moms save money,” Fisher said. “This tugs at my heart a little more because 25 percent of school children are anemic because they don’t get enough nutrition and healthy food every day. “We educate our customers, hand them flyers about what is happening in the community handyman and how it impacts their children but also what they can do to help,” said Fisher. “KiDZ Resale is BILL’S a drop-off center for people who want to drop off food that are nonperishable. They can bring them to the store and we can get them to Community’s Child.” For more information or to donate food, persons interested can call (310) 517-0422 or email KidzResaleBoutique@gmail.com. • “That allowed me to reach out into the community and become involved with more local organizations and businesses,” Fisher said. “Initially I was introduced to Community’s Child through my daughter who is a Girl Scout and completed a silver award with the organization. That really educated me on what they do, what the needs are and how they help children.” Community’s Child is committed to establishing access to healthy alternatives to abuse, poverty, addiction and any sense of hopelessness to women with infants. Part of this nondenominational Christian program’s efforts include putting together healthy food bags that are distributed in schools in the Torrance, Lomita and surrounding areas every Friday. “It is all by donation and fundraising for the organization,” said Fisher. “For me it hits home because this is my neighborhood, this is my community and I feel there a lot of times where we will donate to other areas or outside the country but we don’t really realize that there is such a need locally; especially when it comes to children.” The weekend’s carnival drew a generous crowd and collected enough food for 60-70 healthy food bags, as well as some monetary donations. Fisher was also thankful for all of the other small local businesses that participated in the carnival by contributing food, raffle prices, talents [face painter donated her time] and items such as a snow cone machine and jumper for the kids. “Small businesses are really the backbone of our economy and a lot of them are suffering right now,” said Fisher. “For them to step up to support the event was great.” Collecting food to actively reduce the levels of hunger in Torrance is only part of an effort that includes raising awareness about the issue HOME & APARTMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR QUALITY at Handyman Prices. At this point, there’s no telling what kind of job Luke Walton will do. People thought Mike D’Antoni would be a good hire. Others thought that Mike Brown would be a good fit. Even still, everyone was excited when Byron Scott was hired. All he turned out to be was the worst coach in Lakers history, leading the team to a 38-164 record in two years as coach, including a franchise worst 17-win season one year ago. Three years from now, we’ll be able to look back on Luke Walton as head coach and decide if what he has done with the team has been good or bad. Right now, however, there is optimism in Laker Land once again. A new, young head coach should breathe new life into a young and energetic team. For now, Luke Walton is a great hire for the Los Angeles Lakers. After all, how does it possibly get worse than 17 wins? • 2011 2012 2013 Serving the South Bay for 25 years FREE ESTIMATES plumbing Phone/Text 310.738.7094 23 YEARS EXPERIENCE Sewer Video • Hydrojetting • Bonded • Insured CA LIC. #980971 handyman TOUCHSTONE PAINTING • PLASTERING HANDYMAN Reasonably Priced – Referrals Upon Request 310-517-9677 30 Year Business and Resident in the South Bay flooring KIRK FLOORING (310) 322-6099 Fax (310) 322-6899 lic# 648106 333 Indiana Street, El Segundo sales@kirkflooring.com gardening EL SEGUNDO GARDENER Licensed/Bonded carpet vinyl wood All E.S.
