TORRANCE TRIBUNE April 13, 2017 Page 5 Purrrfect Companions Fidget Nina Every second of every minute of every day, a helpless animal is put to death just because no one was there to take them home. Give one of these kitties a second chance for a lifetime of love in a new forever home. Fidget is a very sweet little boy who loves to cuddle and snuggle with his favorite kitties. He loves to suckle on the other cats, including his sister! Fidget is very easygoing and low-key. His personality vibes with most any other personality. He loves to romp and play and because he is so young, he’s very energetic and silly. Fidget needs a calm, quiet household with someone who understands cats. He cannot be a single cat, and would do best with a very outgoing, confident, people-loving playmate. Fidget sleeps on the bed and loves to hang out with you on the couch. The remainder of his day, he is busy exploring the house and playing with his other feline friends. Lucie is an adventurous little kitten looking for her forever home. Her adorably inquisitive nature makes her an instant hit with everybody she meets! She’s fun, friendly and super sweet! Equal parts cuddly and curious, Lucie is the purr-fect kitty combination! A little love bug, she’s always purring and loves to shower you with kisses and affection. When she’s not taking a nap on your lap, she’s excitedly exploring and playing with her foster brother. As much as Lucie loves spending time with you, she’s overall very low-maintenance and independent. This adorable, happy, healthy girl can’t wait to become part of your family! Nina is a sweet girl who loves attention and loves everyone. She likes to play and is curious, confident and opinionated. Nina is looking for a home with no other animals--she wants to be Wheel. She would love to be adopted with her foster sister Figaro. Her sensitive stomach requires a strict raw food diet. Figaro is a silky-soft, long-haired tuxedo with a silly and sweet disposition. This little goofball is mellow, quiet and inquisitive and has more fluff than she knows what to do with. Figaro is downright adorable and very loving. She likes to be close (especially if you’ve got snacks), but prefers to sit with you rather than on you. She may be low-energy, but she loves her toy mice and her little fishing pole toy! She would love to be adopted with her best friend Philippa. Her sensitive stomach requires a strict raw food diet. Abba was rescued with his four siblings and another litter of kittens from a storage facility. He was a little shy at first, but is now a loving, rambunctious little boy who loves to sit on laps and give kisses. He may still be a bit shy when he first meets someone, but quickly loses that shy side to let out his playful and loving nature. He would love to be adopted with one of his siblings or cousins.  These cats and kittens are available for adoption through Kitten Rescue, one of the largest cat rescue groups in Southern California. All our kitties are spayed/neutered, microchipped, tested for FeLV and FIV, dewormed and current on their vaccinations. the “only.” This gorgeous girl is an adorable delight! She is very social and friendly with everyone. Nina is also easily adaptable and curious. She will come running to the door when you enter the room. Enjoying attention, she likes her independence too. Nina prefers to be the only pet. When you tell her “no,” she understands and listens. Our fabulous Nina is a fantastic cat for someone looking for an adorable playful companion. She would love a peaceful home with cool people or would be content as an office kitty. Duchess is a compact cat who lives up to her name. She is truly royal and will not hesitate to let you know! She may be small, but she is mighty! Also incredibly sleek, she is the picture of elegance. Duchess likes to run the show, but this sweetheart also loves to cuddle and sit next to you on the couch. She’s very chatty and as most duchesses, she is very well-spoken. She will tell you all about her adventures throughout her day. Duchess will be a great companion for a single person or a couple. Although she does well with other cats, she prefers to cuddle and play with dogs. This charming girl will be the perfect addition to a great home! Philippa is a slim, sleek, and an oh-sodainty calico who has enough energy and charisma to rule a kingdom. At first, she may seem wild and carefree, but as soon as you hold her she melts into a puddle of purrs and pure love. Little Philippa loves romping, kisses and heights! She has a high metabolism and must live in an environment where she is allowed to climb. Her favorite pastimes include getting piggyback rides on her foster parent’s shoulders, bird watching, and running on a One Fast Cat Kitty Exercise For additional information and to see these or our other kittens and cats, please check our website www.kittenrescue.org or email us at mail@kittenrescue.org. Following the success of the pilot at CSU Dominguez Hills last spring, the program has expanded to the Cal State Los Angeles, San Diego State University and Cal Poly Pomona campuses. By the fall of 2017, there will be an effort to spread the shoe drive to the remaining Cal State University campuses. “It’s one thing to ask people for money, but it’s a bunch of shoes that people will throw in the garbage which you can give to people who are shoeless,” said Dr. Blischke. “So we have synagogues, churches and clubs and all types of organizations hear about us and know that they can do that, so they contribute.” Founded as a disaster relief group when philanthropists and shoe executives provided footwear for people impacted by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Soles4Souls has been a non-profit since 2006. In that time, the organization has collected more than 30 million pairs of shoes. Half of those have been distributed to people in the United States who are poor, as well as to people affected by tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, fires and other natural disasters. See Shoes, page 7 Lucie “The other half go to 127 foreign countries and the shoes are given to people,” said Dr. Blischke. “Out of the seven billion people estimated to be on this planet, it is projected that one billion are shoeless or they wear discarded trash items that are converted into footwear.” This non-profit also encourages people to donate money, as it costs $1 to ship out one pair of shoes. Those shoes not given away are sold very inexpensively to small businesses, which then resell them at a low cost in an effort to stimulate the local economy. Shoes that are no longer viable to wear are taken apart and recycled into other footwear such as sandals. During last spring’s pilot effort at CSU Dominguez Hills, Dr. Blischke shared that Torrance’s Madrona Middle School caught news of the program and reached out to join the cause. Within two weeks, students, teachers and staff at Madrona collected $195 and 100 pairs of shoes. “Now it has spread to the other middle schools in Torrance and they have been able to collect 1,000 shoes,” said Dr. Blischke.
