Page 2 March 23, 2017 TORRANCE TRIBUNE Community Briefs El Camino Development Program Wins Statewide Exemplary Honors The El Camino College Special Resource Center’s Educational Development Program recently received “Exemplary Program Award” honorable mention from the State Academic Senate. The California Community Colleges Board of Governors recognized ECC’s program earlier this year. The ECC Educational Development Program provides comprehensive services for the college’s Disabled Students Programs and Services students. The program’s 15 courses include academic support for students concurrently enrolled in English, math and computer literacy; courses focused on the soft skills necessary for success, such as time-management and self-regulation; curriculum to enhance self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses related to academics and technology; and courses taught in American Sign Language for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Students enrolled in the courses have access to a variety of support services available through ECC’s Special Resource Center (SRC). The SRC houses the High-Tech Center and Alternate Media Services in which educational development computer literacy faculty collaborate with seasoned staff to support students as they use the services. The result is high-quality instruction via assistive hardware and software technology, all of which facilitates educational access. This “combination and collaboration” creates a welcoming, supportive environment for Educational Development Program students, and reinforces ECC’s mission of providing equal access to its diverse student population. The annual Exemplary Program Award is sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Award nominees must show the overall success of their program; contribution to faculty engagement; demonstrate a response to the needs of students, faculty and the college; collaborate with other programs on campus or within the community; provide evidence that demonstrates how the program supports the community college mission; and can be used as models for other community colleges. This award was established in 1991, and the first recipient was ECC’s Project Success. El Camino College was again honored with the award during the 2009-10 academic year, recognizing the First Year Experience program. Space Science Day 2017 Nearly 1,000 South Bay youngsters visited El Camino College’s annual Onizuka Space Science Day on March 11. NASA astronaut Dr. Kjell N. Lindgren delivered the keynote address in Marsee Auditorium and was also available for a question and answer session. A “chemical magic show” satellite demonstration, space “bugs” discussion, and a paper airplane contest were just a few of the activities students enjoyed. The free event was open to the public and sponsored by ECC, the Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, and American Honda Motor Company. Torrance-South Bay YMCA Encourages Diabetes Awareness American Diabetes Association (ADA) Alert Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday in March, and this year March 28. With millions of Americans at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, the Torrance-South Bay YMCA urges residents to take action to prevent the disease. Currently, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people. Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes, yet only about 10 percent are aware of it. Diabetes also puts an incredible strain on our health care system, costing billions of dollars a year to treat and manage the disease. Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose (sugar) levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Understanding your risk is the first step in preventing diabetes. Several factors including family history, age, weight and physical activity level can contribute to developing type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk for type 2 diabetes by taking the diabetes risk test at ymca.net/diabetes. Those at risk for diabetes can make necessary changes to help prevent the disease. Programs like YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help. Supported by the Torrance Memorial Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute and facilitated by a trained YMCA Lifestyle Coach, the yearlong program at the Torrance-South Bay Y provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about behavior changes that can improve overall health. The program goal is to help adults at risk for diabetes reduce their body weight by five to percent and increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week. Studies show that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can prevent or delay new cases of type 2 diabetes in adults by 58 percent and by as much as 71 percent in those over age 60.
