Page 10 March 19, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE Torrance Alerts from front page constitutes an emergency that would make the sirens sound. When in use the alert sirens wail non-top for several minutes, followed by a short break, which is then interrupted by subsequent continuous wailing. Chimes will eventually signal that everything is clear. It is important for residents to remember that the alert sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month at approximately 11:30 a.m. Also at the city’s and refinery’s disposal are the Crenshaw Street Barriers, which are street closure barriers similar to railroad barriers, located on Crenshaw Boulevard. One such barrier is located near 190th Street and restricts access to southbound traffic; another is located near Del Amo Boulevard to block northbound traffic in the event of a chemical emergency. The City of Torrance used to have an old messaging system but the city changed vendors due to the reputation of the new system, TorranceAlerts. Since TorranceAlerts is new, more residents are expected to sign up for the emergency notification system. However, since most of the messages sent by TorranceAlerts go to landlines, residents without such a service are required to register in order to receive notifications via their cell phones. “The notification system takes mostly that landlines that we get form the two major providers in the city, AT&T and Verizon,” Captain Deuel said. “Those numbers are put in a catalog and as emergency service providers we have access to those numbers through the system if we need alert people in a certain geographical area. “We do need 24 people to sign up as well,” Captain Deuel Hour Service said. “A lot of people have cell phones and Since the cell 1990 •phone Lic # 770059 provider • C-42 C-could 36 C-34 C20 be not A one of the big two, so they would not be part of that database. Just because a person lives here does not mean that their phone number is registered, so we need them to sign up and get that number registered within our system.” Torrance residents can register for TorranceAlerts a fire, or police activity; whatever it is since it’s very versatile.” TorranceAlerts is a free service and also allows city officials to notify residents of nonemergency “There are some messages that we call canned messages, which we have already programed as to what they will say,” Captain Deuel said. “But if there is something unique like police activity where they want residents to lock their doors and stay inside, or leave the area, we can custom make the message to tell people exactly what they need to do.” One issue of concern for residents and city officials was that during the ExxonMobil incident, the alert system asked residents to shelter in place, but not all people understood what that meant. “Shelter in place kind of is what it implies, if at home shut the doors and windows and if it applies, turn off the air conditioners,” Captain Deuel said. “We are trying to have people stay in their home, which is the safest place for them to be rather than trying to drive through places that might be hazardous to them. It is a pretty universal phrase: if you were in Atlanta, Georgia and something happened and the message was to shelter in place, it would mean the same thing as it does in Torrance.” Another notification system available, that elected officials and some residents expressed concern over not hearing, were the community alert sirens located within ExxonMobil’s property. painting incidents, as well. The sirens are used to alert residents who PAINTERS PLUS live up to a 1.2-mile radius from the Torrance Refinery and can be used when an emergency at the refinery or at other local facilities occurs. “As we recall, a big concern was not hearing the siren, when we are testing the siren on the first Wednesday of every month,” Councilmember Ashcroft said during the Feb. 24 council meeting. For years the City of Torrance has been conducting said drills with the sirens once a month and they are still considered a reliable notification tool for city and refinery officials, which work together in order to determine what INTERIOR • EXTERIOR PLUS IMPROVEMENTS • REPAIRS FREE ESTIMATES index/892807736722522#/login or by visiting the city website, http://www.torranceca.gov/ gov.htm. • LOWEST PRICES • GUARANTEED QUALITY 5 YEAR FREE MAINTENANCE SERVING THE BEACH CITIES FOR OVER 20 YEARS City Council from front page was scheduled to take place at the end of last year or early this year. The upgrade will include replacing old servers and computer storage equipment in order to better accommodate “increasing network demands of the Department” states the staff report. In January 2014 the council approved virtual machine and storage area network replacement. By Oct.7, 2014, the council approved SAN. Since then SAN equipment has been purchased and upgraded but in order to complete the entire project, there were $109,514.52 worth of servers yet to be purchased. The city received three bids to complete the upgrade, and included Gov Connection from Merrimack, NH in the amount of $112,911.06 and CDW Government LLC, from Vernon Hills, IL in the amount of $105,302.59, however the bid did not quote on all items associated with the upgrade and turned out not to be the lowest bidder on the items quoted. • Film Review from page 3 band, was regarded by the crew as a pure genius. He brought the ideas, and the crew brought the sounds. Ironically enough, they played on a majority of the Beach Boys records, which was unknown to most everyone. That “Pet Sounds” record you have? Yep, all of those instruments were performed by The Wrecking Crew; only the vocals were by the Beach Boys. Glen Campbell, who became a solo artist years later, actually took over the main guitar spot on the record. Campbell, known today for his hits like “Gentle on My Mind” and “Wichita Lineman,” originally got his start as a musician with The Wrecking Crew. And who did he call upon when it was time for him to record his first album? His friends, his “Crew.” Nearly 60 years later, after the passing of many of its members (for whom the film is dedicated to during the end credits), The Wrecking Crew is finally getting some of the recognition they undoubtedly deserve. After watching this documentary, there is no way you’ll be able to listen to another Beach Boys’ song, Simon & Garfunkel record, or virtually any album from the 60s and 70s without thinking of the real men (and woman) who made it possible. Denny Tedesco not only creates a vivid look at this special moment in history with The Wrecking Crew, but finally gives these hardworking, extremely talented musicians, their turn in the spotlight. • handyman BILL’S HOME & APARTMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR QUALITY at Handyman Prices. He was determined to show the world who his father was and how his group of friends influenced the music industry. Tommy Tedesco was popular among his peers, and his guitar skills were unmatched (If you’ve ever heard the Adam West-starring Batman theme song, or listened to the M*A*S*H* or Green Acres themes, you’ve heard him play). He is probably the most famous artist you’ve never heard of. Tedesco, along with the rest of the musicians, were always just outside of the spotlight, but attention wasn’t what they were after. Being able to play music for a living– paying the bills by playing the guitar– was all they aspired to.
