Page 8 March 5, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE By TerriAnn Ferren Photos by TerriAnn Ferren Tuesday, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day and many people celebrate the event in Torrance and around the world. I remember being taught in school that we celebrate St. Patrick, the missionary, because he brought Christianity to Ireland, using the three-leaf clover (a shamrock) as his visual aid to teach the pagan Irish about the Trinity. He also is said to have driven all the snakes off the island. With the immigration of the Irish to the United States, due to the Irish Potato Famine of the mid 1800s, the Irish population in the United States grew tremendously. When I was in grade school, I remember making sure I wore something green on Saint Patrick’s Day because I didn’t want to get pinched. Today, I am quite sure that game is frowned upon. As an adult, I relish celebrating the day by cooking corned beef and cabbage. Sometimes I go to a restaurant but I do enjoy cooking the traditional dish at home. One year I had a Saint Patrick’s Day dinner party and that was the most fun. I cooked not only corned beef and cabbage, but soda bread too and I decorated the house with green. Never mind that Saint Patrick was born in Scotland. Last weekend I decided to find out what some Torrance and South Bay residents are planning for the upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. Gary Barlough told me he was, “Wearing green.” Dennis McGoldrick, when I asked him what he was doing on the holiday, said, “I’m going to drink,” and then he laughed. “[Really] we have corned beef and cabbage with family. I have five kids and mom and dads with kids. The family comes over and we make some cabbage and make green beer and we have fun,” said Dennis. He went on to tell me that he has always had his family over and celebrated as long as he has been an adult. “My mother always made “When I was in grade school, I remember making sure I wore something green on Saint Patrick’s Day because I didn’t want to get pinched. Today, I am quite sure that game is frowned upon.” corned beef – you should have my mother’s corned beef, ooh,” he added. My mouth was beginning to water and I resisted asking for an invitation to dinner. Then Dennis told me about his craziest St. Patrick’s Day ever. It was when he flew to Payson, Arizona in his plane. Before the trip, he attended an Irish Bar Association Luncheon at the downtown Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, complete with Irish dancers, judging and festivities. Dennis told me it was amazing and so much fun. But because he was going to fly, he didn’t partake of any of the green beer. Making his way to the airport, and then taking off, he knew that the weather was supposed to be clear. But he discovered that the storm that went through the day before had stalled. As he was approaching Payson, Arizona, he ended up between two different layers of clouds. And it was getting dark. Flying with Dennis that day was his friend, an experienced pilot, and they were trying to decide if they needed to do an IFR (instrument flight rules) approach, as there were mountains all around. “I looked over to the left and there was a hole in the clouds behind a mountain and I circled down in real slow and it was completely clear below and we flew around the mountain, down the valley and into Payson, and in we went! And then we drank,” laughed Dennis. Yes, that sounds like a memorable St. Patrick’s Day. Lisa Johnson, on the other hand told me she had no idea what she was doing on St. Patrick’s Day. Nadia Krispel didn’t have any plans whatsoever either. Bob Gervais said, “When is it?” 23-year-old Elyse Sunshine told me, “I was invited to go to Vegas, - so maybe.” Well, at least someone has plans. Brian Sunshine, Elyse’s dad told me, “I might be making a corned beef.” I asked him about the cabbage and he said, “No, I don’t like cabbage.” Guess that takes care of that. Winnie Van Heerden told me that St. Patrick’s Day is her mom’s birthday so she always celebrates it! Nicholas Lancaster told me, “Guess I’ll make corned beef and cabbage.” Tommy Lancaster told me he makes corned beef and cabbage, and he makes it himself. When I asked Martha about her plans for St. Patrick’s Day, nothing could have prepared me for what she shared. “I don’t want corned beef and cabbage. I am Norwegian and the Vikings raped and pillaged Ireland and I am going to wear orange and I am making Swedish meatballs.” Then she laughed lightheartedly, thank goodness. My friend, Michael McGowan told me he plans to cook corned beef, Irish soda bread, and for dessert, he is going to make ginger cake with whipped cream. Sounds delicious. He also told me it is a tradition in New Brunswick, Canada, to have fudge on St. Patrick’s Day. Actually, fudge on any given day sounds yummy. Some cities in the United States go all out for St. Patrick’s Day. Take Chicago: they are celebrating the sixtieth year of their parade. They crown a queen, and they daringly dye their river green! But the oldest and biggest parade in our country takes place in New York City. New York has been hosting their St. Patrick’s Day Parade since 1762. And this Lisa Johnson and Nadia Krispel year, Cardinal Timothy Dolan will serve as Grand Marshall of the parade. Wow. And if you aren’t in New York, don’t fret because the parade will be shown on television. Not to be outdone, the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on Sunday, March 15 and will be televised as well. There are many other cities that boast of a parade, but these are the big three that came to mind when I think of St. Patrick’s Day Parades. All the talk about food reminded me I need to plan my Irish dinner. Yes, I will make corned beef and cabbage again this year and maybe even some Irish soda bread. Having friends over, or meeting for the celebration can make a fun evening. Now, I am not the world’s best corned-beef chef, like Dennis’ mom, but I do okay. Are you going to cook this St. Patrick’s Day? They say everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. I am not sure if that is true, but our country has a long history of celebrating St. Patrick. So, here is a nod to the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. My dear friend Monsignor Michael Lenihan, who died in 2011, had a favorite Irish blessing he loved that goes like this; “May you always have work for your hands to do. May your pockets hold always a coin or two. May the sun shine bright on your window pane. May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you. And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.” Happy St. Patrick’s Day! • TerriAnn in Torrance A Wearing of the Green Finding Senior Housing can be complex, but it doesn’t have to be. “You can trust A Place for Mom to help you.” – Joan Lunden Call A Place for Mom.
