Most cities have those amenities; other perks might be city-specific and geared towards the community there. For instance, in El Segundo, residents can avail themselves of outdoor tree maintenance, a farmer’s market, Dial- A-Ride, the lunchtime shuttle, Girl Scout camp, athletics fields, outdoor and indoor pools, a skate park, the senior center, senior citizens club, the rec center and all its programs, the Lakes golf course, and Meals on Wheels, as well as seasonal events like Easter egg hunts, Christmas tree lighting, and Fourth of July fireworks. Every one of those programs is run by one department here in the city: Parks and Recreation. Parks and Rec maintains every park in the city, from the long strip of Freedom Park to the smallest pocket parks such as Candy Cane Park on the 100 block of Whiting Street. The airport observation area at the top of the hill, where everyone goes to look at the airplanes? That is Clutter’s Park, maintained by Parks and Rec. Do you take your dog to the park on Imperial? Have you enjoyed yourself at the Halloween Frolic? Have you taken the beach shuttle during summer break? One person is in charge of the fireworks firing off on the right day and the soccer players getting the right time for their games at Campus El Segundo: her name is Meredith Petit and she is always working behind the scenes. Petit spent time growing up in Illinois and Seattle, but eventually her family settled in Agoura Hills, where she played soccer, softball, and golf. During her time on the teams, she It’s Time.
