Up and Adam from page 3 West High The West High Warriors have been battling for first place in the Pioneer League all season long. While South has been the heavy favorite to take the league title, the Warriors were feeling pretty good after forcing a 1-1 tie at home against the Spartans back in the middle of January when league play was still in its beginning stages. Back-to-back losses against Centennial and South two weeks ago dropped West out of the running for first place, but ripping second place away from Leuzinger was still a very attainable goal. With back-toback victories over the Olympians last week, head coach Mike Shimizu and West knocked Leuzinger out of the running and took over sole possession of second place in the final Pioneer League standings. The Warriors got right to work in their battle against Leuzinger by pouring on the offense beginning last Monday night at West High in what was a makeup game due to a rainout earlier in the season. West’s Matt Villongco gave the Warriors the first points of the game and the first lead for West before the team took off running. Trent Klaser got the scoring started in the second half to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead before Devin Rochlitz rounded things out to end a pivotal game with a 3-0 shutout victory. The Warriors’ momentum didn’t stop the next day in the second of back-to-back games against the Olympians. West’s offense kept rolling as the Warriors scored two goals in the first half as the team went on to capture a 2-1 victory for the second win a row against Leuzinger. As the cherry on top, West (11-5-3, 6-2-1) closed the regular season out with a 3-2 win at home against Torrance to capture all of the momentum that the team could ask for heading into this year’s CIF playoffs. The Warriors failed to make it into the playoffs a year ago, so they will be relying on their senior leadership to guide them through unfamiliar territory and toward success in the postseason. Torrance High An extremely young Torrance Tartars boys’ soccer team found a way to get better as the season wore on and managed to take home a fourth place finish in the final Pioneer League standings. Victories against Leuzinger, North and Leuzinger once again gave the Tartars their first three-game winning streak of the season before a loss to West High in the final match of the regular season. The Tartars received key contributions from sophomore D’Angelo Alva and junior Dylan Perez, among others, on offense down the stretch while junior goaltenders Matis Dylan and Erich Von Roishmandt served to be imposing figures in front of the net. The Tartars (9-12-2, 6-5) will rely on their youth and experience next season to take a huge step forward and become one of the Pioneer League’s elite teams, as they should have no problem competing for a championship trophy. – Asixlion@earthlink.net • CLASSIFIED ADS The deadline for classified copy and payment is NOON on Tuesday.
