Torrance Chamber from front page
housing market to those in attendance.
Education is also a vital concern of the
Chamber, said Duperron, whose background
before her current role was in education where
she worked as a second grade teacher, high
school activities director and high school
guidance tech. “The Torrance Chamber
established a foundation in 1982,” she said.
“Through this foundation, the Chamber has
partnered with TUSD [the Torrance Unified
School District] on a number of programs
including Educators in the Workplace, Adopt-
A-School, mentor program, Junior Leadership
Torrance and Students in the Workplace.
The Torrance Chamber has also established
a Workforce and Education committee to
bridge the skills gap often found in today’s
workforce. This committee has brought
together El Camino College, California State
University Dominguez Hills, Marymount
California University, Torrance Unified School
District and several employers to discuss ‘next
steps’ in preparing workforce.”
The Chamber also offers Leadership
Torrance -- a program focused on developing
effective leaders from across the South Bay.
The program is designed to give emerging
leaders opportunities to take an active role
in building a stronger community. The
program encourages community connections
through partnerships with City officials and
local businesses. “This is a vital program
for professional growth for our members,”
said Duperron. “From History Day to First
Responders Day to a trip to the California
State Capitol, the participants experience so
much.” Applications for the 2018 program
are currently being accepted. The program
is limited to 25 individuals.
The Torrance Chamber is a non-profit
organization and is funded through
membership and sponsorships, said Duperron.
Businesses that have a business license are
encouraged to join the Chamber. The Chamber
recently moved to what Duperron said is “a
location that is central for members.” The
new office includes a conference room that
holds 40 guests that “will enable members to
gather for meetings, seminars and networking
activities.” The address of the new location
is 3480 Torrance Blvd., Suite 305, in the
90503 zip code. The phone number is (310)
540-5858 and the office is open Monday
through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. •
