Honoring our Presidents
Drivers from page 2
Melissa Vega, manager of the Automobile
Club of Southern California’s Driving School,
warned against trusting caffeine, opening the
windows or singing to keep from nodding off
in traffic. “Your body’s need for sleep will
eventually override your brain’s attempts to
stay awake,” she said.
The AAA had dash cam video to analyze.
Law enforcement officers investigating traffic
collisions on scene must rely on the drivers
involved to explain what led up to a crash. With
the video evidence, the AAA’s new research
estimates that operating a motor vehicle without
enough sleep is eight times higher than traffic
safety experts believed.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention reports that 35 percent of U.S. drivers
sleep less than the recommended minimum of
seven hours daily. Shockingly, 29 percent of
drivers admitted in a separate survey by AAA
they had trouble staying awake while driving
within the past 30 days. Yet, 96 percent of the
respondents believed that drowsy driving is an
unacceptable behavior and a serious threat to
public safety.
A driver who is falling asleep will exhibit
symptoms including trouble keeping their eyes
open, drifting from their traffic lane, and an
inability to remember the past few miles driven,
according to traffic safety experts. To avoid
any of these dangerous behaviors behind the
wheel of a moving vehicle, the AAA recommends
that drivers plan trips during times of
day when they are typically awake and alert.
Also, avoid driving after eating a big meal and
taking medication that makes them drowsy.
And don’t underestimate the good that a
20-minute power nap can do for alertness
and the body’s energy level, club officials say.
Drinking cold water also can kick-start the
body, especially for midday fatigue.
According to the National Sleep Foundation’s
Sleep in America poll, 60 percent of
Americans have driven while feeling sleepy
and 37 percent admit to actually having fallen
asleep while in traffic.
Uber this week announced a new policy for
drivers for their safety and their passengers.
The ride-sharing company will require its
drivers to take a six-hour break from driving
following a 12-hour shift. To guard against
drivers cheating on their time, Uber said a
driver’s app will be taken offline once the
12-hour limit is reached. •
a day when we celebrate all presidents, past
and present. Not everyone likes celebrating
all our presidents on one day. However, that
is what we do.
What do you do on Presidents’ Day? Do
you think about our presidents? How many
of the 45 presidents can you name? In grade
school, I remember my mom helped me learn
all the presidents with making up a story, which
included all their names. Some remember the
names of the presidents with a song. It makes
me wonder what the teachers of today use for
helping their students remember all our presidents
– all 45 of them -- from President George
Washington to President Donald J. Trump.
Do you have a favorite president? I do. Last
Presidents’ Day, I claimed George Washington
as my favorite and I still choose him.
Washington was the very first president of
our small, new nation and led with wisdom
and honor. He was also the first president who
stepped down from his position as leader of
our country, demonstrating the first peaceful
transfer of power in 1797 to John Adams. At
that moment, we as a nation became unique.
Through rough times of war, economic difficulties
and other problems, it is our presidents
who lead our country under the Constitution
and Bill of Rights.
Jerry Ronan, a local resident of over 50 years
as well as a former English and History teacher
and guidance counselor at Torrance High School,
told me, “My favorite president is Obama. I
was just so proud of him on the world stage,
it just made me feel great to be an American
when I saw him. And the whole family was
such a model family. Their interest in helping
people really impressed me. He is my man.
The Republicans were doing to him what the
Democrats are trying to do to the new man.”
I asked Jim Stetson, Spanish teacher at
Torrance South High School who his favorite
president is and he told me, “Definitely for
me, it would be Abraham Lincoln. He upheld
the sacredness and dignity of all human life
during his time and it ultimately cost him his
life. He was a martyr for good and for truth, so
I would definitely go with Abraham Lincoln.”
Then I asked John Bauman who his favorite
president is and he told me something interesting.
“According to my mother, we are related
to George Washington through George Washington’s
mother,” he said. “Now I don’t really
know all the details of who’s who, but that is
what my mom said.” Wow. That is amazing. I
never met anyone related to any of our presidents
and that is something noteworthy, but
when I asked John who his favorite president
is, he told me without hesitation President
Ronald Reagan. When I asked him why, he
said, “Because the Reagan years were good
economically. Business was good, business
seemed to be rolling along…” One thing I think
is interesting is that John ironically married a
woman named…Martha. Get it?
Next, I asked my sister Linda and she said
she never really thought about it but then said,
“George Washington…only because here we
are -- a brand new country and this man feels
confident enough to guide people to create a new
country. Oh my gosh, how awesome is that?
It is very brave of him.” I never realized my
sister also admired George Washington. I mean
it isn’t as if we spent time discussing presidents.
“The president I enjoyed watching be
president was Ronald Reagan. And I think also
Eisenhower because he was a good general
in WWII. And one of my favorite presidents,
although he is probably going to get in trouble
with it, is Trump because he calls a spade a
spade and isn’t a politician and is too honest
for his own good,” said an outspoken person
who said he will remain nameless.
“Democracy is worth dying for because it’s
the most deeply honorable form of government
ever devised by man.” – President Ronald
Reagan. It was George Washington who in
faith began the journey of building a country
over 200 years ago. On Presidents’ Day, we
celebrate the men who have led our country
through good times and bad, challenging times
of war, and times of prosperity. We have indeed
been blessed with three branches of government:
Executive, Legislative and Judicial. On
Feb. 19, we honor all our presidents from
President George Washington to President
Donald J. Trump. Happy Presidents’ Day! •
