Page 2 January 29, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE State of the Region Address Photos provided by Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce The annual State of the Region address was given by Congressman Ted Lieu (33rd District) on January 23rd at the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance to a full house crowd of city officials and business dignitaries. Newly elected Congressman Lieu was also elected freshman class president by his colleagues and “looks forward to getting some bi-partisan things done” and addressed “improving” policy areas affecting the business community. Unified Small Business Alliance Hosts Italian Lesson Congressman Ted Lieu who gave the annual State of the Region address surrounded by past Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce board chairs. The South Coast African Violet Society (SCAVS) hosts its annual African Violet Show and Sale on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA, 90274. Admission to the show and sale is free with paid admission to the South Coast Botanic Garden. A Culture Class will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sales will open at 11:00 a.m., and the Show will be available for viewing from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The public can purchase plants directly from growers at an on-site sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the day of the show. SCAVS members will also be on hand to answer questions and share their enjoyment of growing and showing their plants. Students & Government Day The City of Torrance announces the new topic for its 2015 Students & Government Day, a program to encourage youth participation in community affairs. Selected students will participate in the 9th Annual Students & Government Day, which will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. The City of Torrance encourages all eighth graders to apply for participation by submitting a 100-150 word essay on the prompt: The 26th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants U.S. citizens who are 18 years of age or older the right to vote. What can you do now and in the next few years until you are 18 to prepare yourself to be a well-informed voter and how will this preparation help your decision making? Information and forms are available at local schools and online at www.
