On October 10, Mayor Furey awarded
Ghislaine (Ges) Davis with the Citizen of
the Year Award, and surprised Debbie Hays
with the Jared Sidney Torrance Award. Let’s
just say the Mayor surprised everyone-
-especially Debbie Hays!
Thanksgiving came and went and then we
learned a lot about Ernest Hemingway from
Dr. Terence M. Hammer, MD, who traveled
to Cuba for the annual meeting of the Finca
Vigía Hemingway Association, held at Ernest
Hemingway’s Cuban home estate, Finca
Vigía, located 15 miles east of Havana. Not
only did we see Cuba through Dr. Hammer’s
experiences, but learned a great deal about a
famous American author. Dr. Hammer was
a guest speaker at the conference.
Torrance resident Michelle McIntyre
gave us a peek into her dream job with the
Los Angeles Lakers. And as December rolled
around and we made preparations for Christmas
and Hanukkah, we remembered taking
time to enjoy the moment is good for the
heart and for the soul.
All in all, it has been a very good year.
We in Torrance are blessed in many ways.
We live in a city where our City Manager,
Mayor and Council care about our town.
Citizens participate in local causes, government
and schools. I suggest Torrance is
unique. We are unique simply because we
care about our town and the people who live
in and around us. Thank you for sharing your
stories this past year and for allowing me a
peek into what makes us special. And that
specialness is YOU. •

City of Torrance’s Fabulous Float
Photos by Betsy Maerker
The Mayor Award for most outstanding float from a participating city went to none other than Torrance at Monday’s Rose Parade in Pasadena. The
float embodied the theme “Protecting Nature... The Madrona Marsh Preserve,” vividly capturing the area’s flora and fauna as shown in the photos.
