Her new CD, The Fellas, backed up by the
40-piece Citrus College Blue Note Orchestra,
mesmerized the audience. Later that month, to
celebrate Torrance High School’s Centennial,
the Concert of the Century was planned. The
evening’s performance in the Torrance High
School Auditorium included the reunion of
Torrance High School band members from
the Symbols of Tyme, winners of the 1968
National Battle of the Bands. David Pack
(original member of the band), perhaps best
known as co-founder, singer and guitarist of
Ambrosia, Grammy Award-winning record
producer and voice of timeless hits of the
1970s and ‘80s, returned to Torrance High
School along with Fred Beato (Beato Band).
They were joined on stage with Tom Crouchier
and nearly all their high school bandmates.
It remains one of my favorite concerts of
all time. There was something magical that
night in the building as the music poured
over the audience. It was a truly special
way for Torrance High School to celebrate
turning 100 years old.
Later that month, Torrance residents
joined together with Coastal Cleanup Day
2017, under the leadership of Beach Captain
Leslie Cortez and Beach Co-Captain Betty
Perez who orchestrated volunteers from
American Honda, employees from the Torrance
Community Development Department,
Mayor Furey and councilmembers, along with
local citizens to clean up Torrance Beach.
The event was a huge success and seems
bigger every year. Remember to mark your
calendar for the third Saturday in September
for Coastal Cleanup Day 2018! Let’s keep
Torrance Beach beautiful and the cleanest
one around!
