April 4 Major General Philip Sheridan took command of Army of the Potomac’s cavalry. April 5 General Nathaniel Bank’s force skirmished at Natchitoches, LA. April 6 Louisiana convention adopted a new state constitution abolishing slavery. April 7 General James Longstreet’s corps was ordered to return to Virginia from Tennessee. April 8 Confederate forces halted Bank’s advance at Battle of Sabine Crossroads. April 9 Battle at Pleasant Hill, LA forced Banks to retreat, ending Red River Campaign. These history tidbits were excerpted from United States House of Representatives calendar.
