April 3, 2014 Page 3 Community Health and Wellness Leader Charlotte Lesser Chairs Inaugural South Bay Go Red For Women Luncheon by Kristine Kelly for the American Heart Association LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2014 – Charlotte Lesser, retired director of health education and promotion for the Beach Cities Health District, will lead the inaugural South Bay Go Red For Women Luncheon on May 21, 2014 at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. This year’s event coincides with the 10th anniversary of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement to raise awareness and action to beat heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. For Lesser, her involvement with Go Red For Women is personal, and a tribute to her dear friends Barbara Dunlap and Body Glove founder Bob Meistrell, who both passed away from cardiovascular disease. “Education and prevention are so important with heart disease. We all have a heart, so the issue touches each of us. This is not just a luncheon, it’s a movement to help educate and empower people about how they can make changes to live a healthier life. This year, I am dedicating my involvement to the loss of my college friend and passing of Body Glove’s Bob Meistrell.” For over 45 years, Lesser has dedicated her life to community health and wellness. During her tenure with Beach Cities Health District, she led several community initiatives including health fairs, holiday assistance scrip, wellness classes and a plethora of educational programs designated to enhance public health. As a volunteer and member of several national and local organizations, Charlotte has received numerous awards including Woman of the Year for LA County (LA County Commission For Women), Woman of Service Award and Rose and Scroll Award (Manhattan Beach Chamber), Woman of the Year (Switzer Center), Special Support Award (Project Touch), Citizen of the Year (The Wellness Community and also South Bay Coalition for Drug Free Youth). Heart disease causes one in three deaths among women and it is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined, yet only one in five American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. The Go Red For Women Luncheon brings women together for education, empowerment and networking. The half-day event will feature motivational speakers, educational sessions, an informational health expo and a heart-healthy luncheon. Sponsorship and donation information are available at www. southbaygoredluncheon.heart.org or (213) 291-7051. Go Red For Women has been impacting the health of women for 10 years. Since 2004 more than 627,000 women have been saved from cardiovascular disease and 330 fewer women are dying per day. Funds raised at the Go Red For Women Luncheon help the American Heart Association continue its support of lifesaving heart disease and stroke research. Since 1949, the American Heart Association has invested more than $3.3 billion in research. That investment has yielded or contributed to many important discoveries, including CPR, life-extending drugs, like clot-busters; pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart and lung machine and surgical techniques to repair heart defects. These and other advances make it possible for many to call themselves “survivors.” The South Bay Go Red For Women Luncheon is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and locally by Body Glove, Beach Cities Health District, Neutrogena, Marriott Manhattan Beach, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Chevron and Hooper, Lundy & Bookman, PC. The educational breakout session sponsor is UCLA Health. Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center is the health expo sponsor.
