December 15, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Holiday Home Decorating Contest I hear that we have quite a few entries this year in our Hawthorne Holiday Home Decorating Contest. Judging will take place this week and I should be able to announce the winners in my column next week. We will get their addresses so that you may cruise by and see the wonderful sights of the season. There’s nothing better than Christmas lights and beautiful decorations to get you in the holiday mood. Mr. John Baker Hawthorne lost a good man last week. Native son, John Baker, the originator and facilitator of Cougartown.com, past away last week. John was a friend to many. He was an active member of the Hawthorne Historical Society and helped with the start of the Hawthorne Museum. John was your classic All-American kid living the dream in Hawthorne. He grew up on Cedar Street behind the old plazas. Graduating in the Beach Boys era of 1962 from Hawthorne High, he was one of those classmates that never left. His heart and soul was with his high school buddies. He stayed in touch with many and wanted to give everyone an opportunity to stay together. So, Cougartown became the blog, the Hawthorne High School Facebook before Facebook was even conceived. Literally, hundreds of HHS grads became members and exchanged greetings on a daily basis. John was there to facilitate and direct the interactions. He would answer questions that would come up. He would help organize reunions. He would share news concerning alums that everyone appreciated knowing. He set up cruise nights at Fosters Freeze for his hot rod buddies to reconnect. When we grow up and grow old with someone and they pass, it’s like part of us is lost. One day they are alive and the next they are gone never to be seen in this life again. We will miss John Baker. He had a heart for Hawthorne and his beloved HHS. He will always be a Cougar. A memorial service is planned for a date in January at the VFW in Hawthorne. Our condolences also go out to the family of Loretta Miller who also past away last week. She was the widow of former mayor, Joe Miller. Many of us remember Lisa Miller, their daughter, who was a long-time, City employee. We pray for both the Baker and Miller families at the passing of their loved ones. Food, Toys and Goodwill Hawthorne cares. There are at least three organizations in Hawthorne that are giving food, toys and showing goodwill to the disadvantaged or low income families in our community. The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce has their annual food and toy give away. The same goes for the Hawthorne Presidents Council and finally, the Del Aire Assembly of God Church under the direction of Rev. John Jefferson has organized a food drive for the past four months to feed the most needy of families in our school district. It’s great that we have caring individuals and groups who look out for the needs of others in Hawthorne. Enjoy and Rejoice I know some of you just skip the boring stuff that I write about above and look at my last post to read my crazy “cold one” stories. One way or another I seem to work my way into mentioning a cold one every week. So there you go. I’m done. I mentioned it, so go chuckle a little and snap open that can, or twist open that bottle, or tap into that keg and enjoy. Life is too short not to enjoy. We only have a certain number of days to enjoy, our days are numbered here on earth, so enjoy. The good book tells us to “Rejoice, and again I say Rejoice”. What is there to rejoice about?, you might ask. We should rejoice that we have our loved ones, our pets, our friends, our good quiet neighbors, our somewhat sober city clerk, and all the good and bad that make up our daily lives. This is the season to rejoice. Rejoice that God came to earth in the form of a baby to save us from our sins. That baby Jesus lived, paid the price for our sins upon a cross, and now sits on the right hand of the Father. God loves us and because of Jesus we can have eternal life. Enjoy life. Rejoice in the life God gives you. Have a Merry Cold One this Christmas! • – norbhuber@gmail.com We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
