Third Annual Lawndale Blues & Jazz Music Festival Filled the Air By Nancy Peters two-man blues band, made a repeat performance Saturday afternoon, September 26, beginning at this festival. at 1 p.m. the sounds of blues and jazz music The final performer was internationallyrenowned could be heard in the Jane Addams Park, saxophonist, J. Boykin, who in his adjacent to the middle school, as the Third Annual Lawndale Blues & Jazz Music Festival got underway. The venue was new for the event, which had previously been held at the Civic Center and City Hall Plaza. “We knew we needed to find a new venue,” said Mike Estes, Community Services Manager, whose department plans the event. “After the first year with 400 in attendance and then last year, we doubled that number. We wanted the event to be more family oriented and thought having in a park with this great open grassy area, enclosed by fencing, would be the perfect place. “We began planning this year’s event last November. The Parks, Recreation and Social Service Commission, chaired by Madonna Sitka, along with the other commissioners, Sirley Cuevas, Daniel Urrutia, Erica Harbison and Luvert Austin, sit in a room and view the submitted bands, either on YouTube, in video format, or just listen to an MP3 submission. This year they chose five bands. This place should be rocking for the next few hours.” The five bands appeared on the bandstand for 55-minute sets. First to appear was Big Daddy T Blues Band, with their House Rockin’ Blues tunes, entertained the crowd with their sounds, heavily influenced by Herbie Hancock, Muddy Waters, Booker T. and the MGs. Next up was Floyd and the Flyboys, performing for more than 23 years with their traditional blues, rhythm & blues, roots rock, gospel, and some jazz in there as well. The mid-afternoon included the sounds of the Lawndale Blues Boys with Councilman James Osborne shredding up the strings on his Don Grosh custom modeled Fender Stratocaster during the set that included tunes from CC Ryder and John T. Hooker. Awesomeblue, a usual fashion, made his way through the crowd with his trusty sax, blowing his blues and jazz all around the park and neighborhood. “Each year we hope to grow the event,” said Estes, “but hopefully not so much that we can’t find a big enough park in Lawndale. The Gardena Blues Festival got so big that they’ve had to move it out and start charging. Lawndale wants to maintain quality entertainment for our attendees, but we don’t want to outgrow Lawndale,” he said. This year the music festival also welcomed some vendors with booths to inform the public about conservation of water, utilities, and helping the environment. In addition, Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles had his own booth where citizens could ask questions and get more information about the city, along with the City of Lawndale booth with the City Manager and other staff in attendance. The Charity Car Show, held as a partner event in the parking areas around the six acres of the park, was sponsored by the Restoration Life Christian Church of Lawndale. The show included 90 cars, trucks, and some motorcycles, none newer than 1972. The proceeds of the car show were given to Destiny Rescue, an organization that works to rescue children from the sex trafficking trade in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India, The Philippines, and the Dominican Republic. The fundraising for Destiny Rescue also includes the sale of the goods the rescued children produce in jewelry and clothing after they are placed in a healthy home environment in-country and provided with a job training program. Some become hairdressers, waitresses, seamstresses, and through advanced government programs, can attend college. The emcee for the Third Annual Lawndale Blues & Jazz Music Festival was DJ L.A. Ed Edwards, a familiar voice at most Lawndale events. KLOS FM 95.5 was broadcasting live from the Jane Addams Park throughout the festival. Mike Estes explained, “The Parks, Recreation, and Social Service Commission sponsors a fireworks sales booth in Lawndale and for the last three years the proceeds from those sales have funded this event so that we can pay the bands a stipend for their appearance here. After all, they are all professional performers. We have city staff to help with set-up and tear down, and a Public Works staff member is on duty to keep things moving along during the event since we maintain the park anyway. “Introducing the car show into the mix this year has allowed for more people to participate in the entire event and hopefully we will be able to organize next year’s music festival with the same car show.” Neighbors who live adjacent to Jane Addams Park were informed by mail that the event would be held and were made aware of the ingress and egress of vehicles for the car show, which was held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. “We realize that no matter what kind of notice you circulate, there will always be somebody who didn’t get it, read it, claim to not know about it, and will complain about the ‘noise’ from the music. With the caliber of bands this year, I’m sure everyone will be entertained,” concluded Estes. Any bands interested in entering their information can email mestes@lawndalecity. org. Lawndale CityTV recorded the event and will be selling DVDs shortly. Check the CityTV webpage for information on obtaining a DVD of the Third Annual Lawndale Blues & Jazz Festival or the Lawndale CityTV YouTube Channel. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016, currently planned for Jane Addams Park. • Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................4 Classifieds............................2 Community Briefs...............3 Film Review..........................2 Hawthorne Happenings....3 Legals................................ 6-7 Sports....................................4 Weekend Forecast Friday Sunny 79˚/66˚ Saturday Sunny 77˚/64˚ Sunday Sunny 70˚/63˚
