September 15, 2016 Page 5 Cougars Struggle On Offense In Loss To South By Eric Ramos, photos by Dirk Dewachter Hawthorne struggled offensively and miscues on special teams led to a 14-6 nonconference road loss to South Torrance last Friday. Both teams played a sloppy first quarter. The Cougars took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter after a 12-play, 78 yard drive, capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Kalinowski to wide receiver Carlos Jacobo. The Spartans got a spark on special teams when Patrick Patterson returned the kickoff 64 yards to the Cougars 27 yard line. With 32 seconds left in the half, South quarterback Anthony Bjazevich scored on a 4-yard keeper. South took a 7-6 lead at halftime. Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter. Hawthorne’s offense couldn’t get on track and failed to gain momentum in the game. The Spartans’ defense was stout and shut down the Kalinowski to Jacobo connection all game. The running game was held in check. To win a close, sloppy game, turnovers and special teams are key. The South coaching staff preached playing all three phases of the game. South defensive tackle Jake Fejer broke loose and blocked a Cougars punt, which South recovered deep in Hawthorne territory. Two plays later, Bjazevich scored on a 5-yard run, giving South a 14-6 lead in the fourth quarter. Hawthorne had a potential game-tying touchdown called back on a chop block penalty with 3:23 remaining in the game. The Cougars went for it on fourth and goal from the Spartans 17-yard line but the pass was broken up by a South defender. South defensive lineman Nathaniel Kaopua (No. 58) tackles Hawthorne’s Eric Foster (No. 25) in the backfield as Anthony Rugnetta (No. 4) closes in to tackle Foster for a loss. South ran the clock out and first-year coach Matt Mishler notched his first win for the Spartans. Hawthorne (1-2) will look to bounce back when the travel to Banning Friday for a nonconference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Hawthorne has two more non-league games before conference play begins. Including the big rivalry game versus Leuzinger on Sept. 23. The Cougars hold a 36-35 record over the Olympians since 2004. Banning has a three-game winning streak and is coming off a 50-18 win over Millikan last Friday. The Pilots have scored 108 points in three games. The Hawthorne defense will have its hands full. Lawndale vs. Crespi Lawndale opened the season with a win over South Torrance. The Cardinals defense struggled in a 49-23 nonconference loss to Crespi last Friday. Lawndale led 16-14 at halftime, however, the defense gave up 35 points in the second half. Lawndale’s sophomore running back Jordan Wilmore had two touchdown runs while quarterback Jalen Hamler scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals are back in action when they travel to Leuzinger for a nonconference matchup Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Leuzinger is coming off a 40-26 loss to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Inglewood vs. Blair The Sentinals running game was firing on all cylinders as it rolled up 279 yard rushing on its way to a 64-0 nonconference win over Blair last Friday. Inglewood jumped out to a 32-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Junior running back Teshawn White rushed for 116 yards on nine carries while adding three touchdowns. Fellow junior running back Daniel Barnett added 73 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Getting into the mix was another junior running back, Tyaire Dunlap, who finished with 70 yards on only three carries while adding two touchdowns. Sophomore defensive end Michael Yates led the Sentinals’ defense with eight tackles while adding a sack. Junior linebacker Shawntre Ratliff Jr. added five tackles. Inglewood (2-0) will host Los Angeles High School Friday at 7 p.m. The Romans come into the game after a 56-27 win over Dominguez. • A couple of Hawthorne players tackle South’s Evan Tookey (No. 7). Hawthorne quarterback Andrew Kalinowski (No. 9) puts together a strong drive in the fourth quarter but fell short of scoring because of a personal foul. South offensive lineman Christian Palomarez (No. 50) protects his quarterback as Hawthorne’s Eric Foster (No.25) rushes in during the fourth quarter. Eric Foster (No. 25) found the sideline for a large gain as South’s Brandon Teraishi (No. 8) misses the tackle.
