September 15, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings From City Clerk Norb Huber Change CHANGE happens. If we are alive, then change happens throughout our lives. We can look at change in many different ways. We can get upset and throw in the towel. We can resist it. We can embrace it. We can look at it as an opportunity for bigger and better things to come in our future. Nothing can ever really remain the same. With the new development happening in our downtown section, change is happening in Hawthorne. With these positive changes happening, we would like to invite the public to celebrate the temporary closing of the Hawthorne Museum. We will be saying goodbye to the museum that was housed at the former Hawthorne city hall and police station. We are planning a closing event on Saturday, October 8 starting at 9 a.m. That day will also be moving day and we are looking for volunteers to help us move the museum to storage. We have not found a place to move to as of yet. We are thankful to the City for the five years that we had at the site across from the county library. This will be the last time that visitors will have an opportunity to see the historical displays that have been set up at that site. Come help us celebrate Change! Job Fair A Job Fair sponsored in part by the South Bay Work Investment Board will be held at the Memorial Center on Thursday, September 29 starting at 10 a.m. for all Hawthorne area residents looking for employment. In past years, many younger folks have been offered jobs right on the spot when attending this annual event. Literacy Awareness Meeting The Hawthorne School District will be sponsoring a Literacy Awareness Meeting on Monday, September 19th at 6 p.m. at the Ramona School Cafeteria. This is a FREE literacy program offered to every family in Hawthorne. You will learn about a free reading and literacy app that is being offered that is fun, engaging, and presented in both English and Spanish. It contains thousands of books, songs, games and activities. You can be old like me or young like my grandkids to take advantage of this app. It’s never too late or early to learn to speak Spanish or English. Drinking and Driving With the recent fatality in our city due to a driver who was allegedly driving under the influence, we are once again reminded of the seriousness of alcohol consumption and getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Besides taking a taxi, there are services that are easy to access like Uber or Lyft that will safely get you home. Many people just can’t admit that they have had one too many. Our denial is similar to texting and cell phone use behind the wheel. We know it’s not safe, but a high percentage of drivers think that it’s worth the risk to communicate in their cars while navigating our busy streets. It’s not safe. Distracted driving and impaired driving are just as dangerous. When I encourage my readers to have a cold one, I suggest this celebrative consumption be done after a long day of work in the comfort of their homes. Please consume your cold ones responsible. St. Joseph’s Family Fiesta Family fun, food and carnival rides are all set for the annual St. Joseph’s Family Fiesta to be held the weekend of September 23-25. The activities open on Friday evening and conclude on Sunday afternoon. The parish is located at 119th Street and Acacia Street, just one block east of Hawthorne Blvd. • Comments: norbhuber@gmail.com Police Reports Mon 8/29/16 to THur 9/1/16 Robbery W 147Th St/S Inglewood Av Street, Highway, Alley Mon 8/29/16 02:45 Property Taken: Blue Herchel Backpack W/ Horse Designs, Black Bi-Fold Leather Wallet, Tsa Uniform, Lax Access Card And Federal Tsa Id Card, 24 Inch Yellow Gold Necklace W/ “Jesus” Face Penda, Nikon Yellow Gold Watch Attempt Residential Burglary 14000 S Lemoli Av House Mon 8/29/16 09:46 Property Taken: Lockbox Method Of Entry: Pried Burglary – Residential 4200 W 139Th St House Mon 8/29/16 12:07 Method Of Entry: Body Force Poe: Other Door Burglary – Residential 13200 S Florwood Av House Mon 8/29/16 13:21 Method Of Entry: Unlocked Poe: Sliding Window Burglary – Commercial 14100 S Hawthorne Bl Restaurant, Fast Foods, Cafe Tue 8/30/16 02:55 Method Of Entry: Smashed Burglary – Commercial 14500 S Hindry Av Service Station, Gas Vendor Tue 8/30/16 09:15 Property Taken: Socket Set Craftmans, Misc.
