July 16, 2015 Page 5 Holly Park Loses Hard Fought Championship to Westchester By Joe Snyder The Holly Park Major Little League All- Star Baseball team continued to put up a good fight before falling on the short end of a 4-3 score to host Westchester in the District 37 championship game last Thursday at Carl Nielsen Youth Sports Park. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when a solo home run by Malik Clayton gave Westchester a 1-0 lead. Just two batters later, Mike Mulligan, Jr. blasted a two-run shot for a 3-0 Westchester advantage. Holly Park, though, did not give up. It had a homer of its own from pitcher Paco Orozc for three runs to knot the contest at three. Westchester, though, quickly responded as Brian Dennis drove in the winning run with a single for the title and a spot in the Section 4 Tournament it began to host last Sunday when it faced District 36 champion Manhattan Beach. “It was a great game,” Holly Park manager Karl Rouston said. “The kids never quit. I take my hats off to Westchester. They’re a good team.” A day earlier, Holly Park took the championship into the double final with an 8-4 win over Westchester. Holly Park flexed its muscles with three home runs, two of those from Atin Wright who drove in four runs. Martin Palayo added a two-run shot. Winning pitcher Donjae Littlefield went four innings, allowing three earned runs. After a 5-2 loss to Westchester in a winner’s bracket game on July 5, Holly Park bounced back to down Del Rey 9-5 on July 7. Holly Park trailed Del Rey 5-4 before scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to lead for good. Lennox Minors Win District The Lennox Minor (age 9-10) Little League All-Star Baseball team captured the District 37 championship by outlasting host Westchester 1-0 on July 6 at Nielsen Park. Lennox moved on to the Section 4 Tournament at Rolling Hills Little League. The tournament lasts through the weekend. The Lennox All-Star Junior (age 13-14) Little League Baseball team also advanced to the Section 4 Tournament after being the only District 37 team in that division. Lennox automatically advanced due to this. Lennox started last Saturday against District 27 champion Harbor City at the Henderson Youth Sports Complex in San Pedro. If Lennox won, it was to face either District 25 champion North Venice or District 36 champion Redondo Beach on Sunday. Results were not available. Tri Park Falls in Senior Final The Tri Park Senior Little League Baseball All-Star team, which includes players from Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena and El Camino Village, lost in the Section 4 final to host Manhattan Beach 4-0 on July 1 at Marine Park. District 36 champion Manhattan Beach includes mostly players from its 2014 Junior Little League All-Star squad that advanced to the World Series and its seniors are top contenders to advance to the World Series this year. After beginning with a 10-4 win over District 25 champion Beverly Hills, Tri Park lost to Manhattan 12-0 before topping Beverly Hills 12-9 to advance to the final. Jones Guides Leuzinger Hoopsters Leuzinger High recently hired recent Redondo High top assistant coach Arturo Jones as its head boys’ basketball coach starting this coming season. Jones worked the past three seasons with Reggie Morris, Jr., who guided the Olympians from 2002-10, at Redondo (2012-15) and with Morris at Leuzinger from 2006-10. He helped the Olympians capture the CIF-Southern Section Division IA championship over Santa Monica in the 2009-10 season. That squad was led by Delon Wright, who was recently drafted in the National Basketball Association by the Toronto Raptors. Jones continued to teach at Leuzinger. Jones replaces recently resigned Ali Parvez, who coached the Olympians from 2010-15 and led them to the Bay League crown in 2012 and the Pioneer title this past season. Leuzinger made the Division IIIA semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2015. Parvez had a coaching record of 89 wins and 56 losses. He also helped Morris to a California State Division II and Southern Section Division IIA championships in the 2012-13 season at Redondo. • Fall Semester Begins 9.8.2015 Visit our website to see list of courses at www.socalroc.com SOUTH BAY WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD ASSISTS JOB SEEKERS, EMPLOYERS AND YOUTH THROUGH GOVERNMENT-FUNDED PROGRAMS For more than 30 years, the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) has administered employment and training programs for LA County’s South Bay Area. Within the 11 cities serviced (Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Lomita and Torrance), the SBWIB accomplishes its goals through partnerships with local committees handling business and economic development, One-Stop locations, performance and evaluation, as well as a Youth Development Council.  Through workforce investment funds, the SBWIB offers dislocated workers with free training programs and job-searching resources. Job-searching equipment, as well as seminars, workshops and job placement assistance are available at the four One-Stop Business & Career Centers (Gardena, Inglewood, Carson and Torrance – effective 7/14/15). The SBWIB assists businesses through an innovative Rapid Response Program geared towards layoff aversion. Parker Hannifin Corporation’s Carson facility is a recent success story. An initial meeting revealed that nearly 60 employees lacked sufficient English skills and were facing potential layoff. A layoff aversion plan was formulated that resulted in the SBWIB approaching a local adult school partner to assess the employees’ English skill levels and set up on-site training. Since September, the affected employees have been attending Business English classes three days a week with several of those individuals now being considered for promotions. Recruitment assistance, pre-screening of applicants, On-The-Job training and Transitional Subsidized Employment (TSE) are other programs available to local companies and small businesses. The SBWIB also prepares youth for entry into the workforce by emphasizing education and services that promote relevant workplace skills and experiences leading to industry-recognized credentials and career pathway employment, including apprenticeships. Special emphasis is aimed at the reengagement of disconnected youth through intervention and prevention services. The SBWIB is one of the highest performing Workforce Investment Boards (WIB) in the state and is often recognized by the California Workforce Investment Board (CWIB) for its achievements. Continuous collaborations with business, economic development, education, government, labor and community organizations, helps the SBWIB provide a dynamic, efficient and effective workforce development system, ensuring a skilled workforce and vibrant economy in the South Bay Area.
