City Council from front page reducing crime. “Crime is up in communities throughout California,” said the Mayor, noting that the Council increases funding every year for law enforcement. “This is reflected in our budget commitment,” he said. City Attorney Tiffany Israel clarified Lawndale’s due process procedure, saying most cases are resolved in-house through administrative hearings. The Council opened a public hearing on short-term rentals and unanimously adopted a staff recommendation to amend municipal codes, banning short-term rentals in residential areas. Sean Moore, Director of Community Development, explained the proliferation of Air BnB-type properties warrants the move. Councilman Jim Osborne said the action, which curbs rental agreements of 30 days or less, will discourage “party-house syndrome and vacation-type rentals” within Lawndale. A second public hearing was opened, seeking feedback on updating municipal codes to create financial incentives for affordable housing. Parking, a perennial topic at Council meetings, was the focus, as the “density bonus” standards mandated by the state require specific parking options. Israel noted the changes will comply with state codes on high-density constructions. The Mayor wanted assurances that the change wouldn’t lock the City in to tandem parking. Israel clarified, saying, “With the density bonus, if tandem parking is allowed YOUR AD HERE elsewhere [in the city], then you have to allow it in high-density buildings.” The Council ultimately moved forward, approving the change. The Council also approved a staff report to open dialogue on a mixed-use development at the proposed Marine Avenue Metro Green Line Station. Moore noted the transit-oriented development (TOD) ordinance prioritizes high-density vertical usage and bike paths in proximity to mass transit lines. The Council filled a vacancy on the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee. Appointee Larry Stouch was unanimously confirmed. A resident since 2001, Stouch said he figured it was time to get more involved and give back. “Lawndale has been good to me,” he said. Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Reid noted nominations for the second annual Lawndale Wall of Distinction will close on May 25. Residents are encouraged to submit the names of community members of distinction. The program posthumously honors up to four individuals who have “distinguished themselves… by providing exemplary service” to the city and its residents. The Lawndale City Council will hold a special meeting next week. A budget workshop will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lawndale City Hall Council Chambers at 14717 Burin Avenue. • YOUR AD HERE Email to reserve your space marketing@heraldpublications.com Email to reserve your space marketing@heraldpublications.com OVER 40 THOUSAND PAPERS DELIVERED WITHIN MILES OF YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS.
