He advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Brandon Brown, then, slashed a double to score Monarrez and the Cougars had the early lead. From there, the pitching took over. Monarrez went five innings, allowing three hits and striking out four batters. Phelps pitched the final two innings, limiting Beverly Hills to just one hit and striking out four. Norman pitcher Zach Guiller proved very tough. Guiller allowed just two hits, including Brown’s run-scoring double, striking out five. He hit one batter, that to Monarrez in the first, and walked two. “It was a good win for our ball club,” Hawthorne head coach J.C. Randolph said. “It was good for the kids to bounce back.” The Cougars, though, fell to 1-3 in league after losing at Beverly Hills. Hawthorne is 15-10 overall after splitting a doubleheader with Animo Leadership from Inglewood on Saturday. In the first game, Hawthorne scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added five in the sixth in the blowout. The Cougars scored twice in the first, one in the second and one in the fifth. In the nightcap, the Cougars lost to the Aztec-Eagles, currently ranked sixth in the CIF-Southern Section Division VII, 5-1. Adam Miranda sparked Animo by going two-for-three with two runs batted in. Abel Rodriguez was one-for-two, drove in two runs and scored twice. Winning pitcher Cesar Rocha pitched a complete game three-hitter. He struck out eight batters and walked three. Hawthorne has two Ocean games with El Segundo this week. Last Thursday, the Cougars traveled to La Cienega Park in Beverly Hills and fell on the short end of a 6-5 score. Hawthorne got off to a good start in its non-league game Saturday at 10 a.m. The Cougars resume league at Culver City next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Lawndale Falls Twice to Samo Lawndale High’s baseball team played Santa Monica, one of the favorites in the Ocean League, tough but lost two close games to the Vikings last week. At Santa Monica on April 19, the Cardinals, who are 0-4 in league, fell short of the Vikings 7-6. At Lawndale last Thursday, Santa Monica remained unbeaten at 4-0 in Ocean action with a 4-2 victory. Lawndale has two league games against Beverly Hills this week. After hosting the Normans on Tuesday, Lawndale visits Beverly Hills at La Cienega Park today at 3:15 p.m. Lawndale hosts El Segundo in Ocean play next Tuesday at the same time. Torrance Overwhelms Leuzinger Leuzinger High’s baseball team is still struggling after lopsided shutout losses to always powerful Torrance last week. At Leuzinger on April 20, the Olympians were victims of a record performance b y the Tartars’ Konnor Smith in a 19-0 loss. At Torrance Park last Friday, the Tartars continued to dominate Leuzinger 14-0. On April 20, Smith, a junior catcher, hit four home runs in four at-bats to tie a CIFSouthern Section record with 10 other players. He drove in 11 runs as Torrance had little trouble with the Olympians. Leuzinger has not had a winning season since 2002. Leuzinger, which fell to 0-4 in the Pioneer League and 1-12 overall, has two league games against another top Pioneer contender, South Torrance, this week. After hosting the Spartans last Tuesday, the Olympians visit South Friday at 3:15 p.m. Leuzinger travels to North Torrance for another 3:15 p.m. Pioneer game next Wednesday. Local Tracksters Compete in South Bay Meet Track and field athletes from Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lawndale High Schools vied in last Saturday’s South Bay Championships last Saturday at West Torrance High. Some had strong showings. Inglewood’s girls did quite well, especially in the 400-meter run and the shot put. In the 400, the Sentinels’ Timeera Lewis who won her heat at one minute and 2.51 seconds. In the more prestigious Invitational heat, The Sents had a fourth and fifth place finish from Tajanae Nettles (1:01.13) and Iyani Williams (1:01.33), in order. In Flight Two of the girls’ shot put, Alicia Gillins was first at 29 feet, six inches and Alexis Jones finished third with a toss of 27-7. Inglewood’s co-ed 4x200-meter relay squad was third in its heat clocking 1:48.65. Hawthorne was led by Serena Gilbert who was third in her heat of the girls 400 meters in 1:03. The Cougar boys had an 11.3 100-meter performance by Keyshawn Berry, who finished seventh. For Lawndale, junior Josh Velasco placed 12th in the boys’ 1,600-meter run timing 4:44.2.
