After visiting the Panthers Wednesday, Morningside is at home against Peninsula Friday at 3:15 p.m. Then, it’s on to visiting unbeaten Redondo (15-0 and third in the country for middle size schools) next Wednesday at the same time. Lawndale Easily Sweeps HMSA It was spring break and Lawndale High’s baseball team enjoyed it quite a bit with an easy sweep of a smaller Hawthorne Math and Science Academy squad last week. After shutting out the Aviators 15-0 on April 5, the Cardinals played HMSA at Holly Park in Hawthorne last Thursday and came home with an 11-1 victory. In both games, Lawndale head coach Steven Washington was able to move several players up from his junior varsity team and they were played a lot in both contests, especially the second one. In the first contest, Jorge Campos went five innings, allowing three hits, striking out five batters and walking none. First baseman Tyler Bonsky had two hits and drove in four runs. Junior Jesus Sanchez added an inside-the-park grand slam. He had two hits and six RBI’s. In the second game, Washington went to playing his JV’s that dominated the Aviators. “I didn’t want to drive up the staff and the score,” Washington said. With two games where the Cardinals were able to relax, especially their starters, it’s on to a much more competitive Ocean League, starting with Culver City. The Centaurs, who are 8-5, are expected to be one of the top contenders, along with Santa Monica and El Segundo, for the league crown. Culver is led by pro and NCAA Division I college prospect pitcher Nolan Martinez. Martinez already committed to playing baseball at UCLA if he is not drafted high enough to where he signs. After visiting the Centaurs last Tuesday, Lawndale hosts Culver City today at 3:15 Article and photos by Joe Snyder Leuzinger High’s baseball team has been struggling over the past several seasons but it finally pulled through with an 8-4 non-league win over Dominguez High from Compton on April 6 at Leuzinger. Last Thursday at home, the Olympians were edged by Inglewood Morningside 12-11. Against the Dons, the Olympians, who are 1-7, started by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Leuzinger was ahead 5-4 before putting the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Olympians were led by David Oliver who went two-for-two with two triples and three runs batted in. Jose Rodriguez had four hits and drove in two runs. Rodriguez was also the winning pitcher with a complete game four-hitter. He allowed only one earned run. Rodriguez and Oliver also each had three hits and drove in three runs in Leuzinger’s loss to the Monarchs. It was the Olympians’ second loss to Morningside this season. On March 8 at Morningside, the Monarchs rolled over Leuzinger 11-1. Last Thursday, Morningside (4-7) was led by Gerardo Carrillo who had three hits and drove in four runs. It is now league time for both squads. Leuzinger opens the Pioneer League against West Torrance this week. After visiting the Warriors (8-6) on Wednesday, the Olympians host West Friday at 3:15 p.m. With 13 players back from last season’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV quarterfinalist squad, West is one of the favorites in league and is currently ranked fifth in the Division IV. One of West’s wins was its season opener against Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, which two weeks ago won the prestigious Southern California Boras Classic with a 2-1 win over nationally ranked San Juan Capistrano Junipero Serra, also top rated in the Southern Section Division I. That put the Mustangs (13-2) into number-one in the nation for middle sized schools but they could drop after seeing their 13-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to Westlake in the Chatsworth Tournament last Saturday. Leuzinger is at home against an always tough Torrance squad next Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. Morningside is in the rigid Bay League, led by nationally ranked Mira Costa and Redondo. The Monarchs have two games against Rolling p.m. Coming up next is another top squad in Santa Monica in which the Cardinals visit next Tuesday at the same time. Hawthorne Softballers Edge Temple City Hawthorne High’s softball team edged Temple City 4-3 in a Sonora Tournament game on March 26 in La Habra. The Cougars started well, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. The Rams tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the sixth, but Hawthorne pushed across a run in the top of the seventh, then held on for the win. Earlier on March 26, the Cougars lost to Bishop Montgomery of Torrance 4-1. The Knights scored four runs in the first three innings and Hawthorne mustered just one in the top of the fourth. • Leuzinger batter Robert Hurtado swings against Dominguez. Leuzinger shortstop Christian Villegas throws ball to first base to put out a Dominguez High baserunner during last week’s non-league baseball game. The Olympians host West Torrance in a Pioneer League game Friday at 3:15 p.m.       Leuzinger High pitcher Jose Rodriguez prepares to throw to a Dominguez batter during last week’s non-league baseball action.
