April 7, 2016 Page 5 Hawthorne Remains Unbeaten by Outlasting Gardena Article and photos by Joe Snyder On March 29, Hawthorne High’s baseball team traveled to Gardena in a battle of two surprisingly unbeaten teams. In the end, the Cougars improved to 8-0 with an eight-inning 3-2 victory over the Panthers. After a 1-1 tie through seven innings, Hawthorne pushed over two runs to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth. After Bernardo Robles struck out, Kealoha Noguchi beat out an infield single. Andres Cordova flied to right before Andy Monarrez walked, then both advanced on a wild pitch. Charles Phelps proceeded to single in both runners. Gardena attempted to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Daniel Herrera singled before Roberto Chavez walked. Daniel Storey hit into a fielder’s choice forcing Chavez out at second as Herrera went to third. Herrera proceeded to score when Jorge Avila grounded to shortstop. Andy Ibarra walked but Monarrez got Pedro Trejo to strike out ending the threat as the Cougars won their eighth straight contest. Hawthorne scored first in the top of the fourth when Peter Girgis scored on a base hit from Monarrez. Chavez drove in the tying run on a single in the bottom of the sixth. Although it was a close game, the two teams combined for nine errors as the Cougars committed five and Gardena (4-1) made four. “The game was ugly,” Hawthorne head coach J.C. Randolph said. “We still won and we’re unbeaten.” The two teams were to play another game, probably during this week, according to Randolph. The Cougars begin the Ocean League with a more challenging one as they visit Santa Monica next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. The Vikings are expected to be one of the favorites, along with El Segundo and Culver City, in league play. “If we can stay healthy, we can compete with anybody,” Randolph said. “I feel we can match with them (Santa Monica).” Lawndale High’s Tyler Bonsky steals home in last week’s non-league baseball game against Morningside. The Cardinals split two games with the Monarchs, winning at home 11-4 on March 29 and 17-2 at Morningside last Thursday. Morningside High baseball teams played a pair of non-league games as home team won each of those contests. At Lawndale on March 29, the Cardinals downed the Monarchs 11- 5. Morningside, then, hosted Lawndale last Lawndale and Morningside Split During last week, the Lawndale and Thursday and the Monarchs thrashed the Cardinals 17-2. At Lawndale, the Monarchs, who are 4-5 overall, jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Cardinals (5-5) used a seven-run third to take the lead for good. Julian Diaz gave Lawndale the lead for good with a two-run single. The big inning was also highlighted by Isaac Galan and Tyler Bonsky both stealing home. Michael Zembrano also had a run-scoring double and he scored on Jesus Sanchez’s single. Alberto Gomez had a bases cleaning double and Galan added a run scoring base hit to highlight the Cardinals’ four-run fifth inning. Hermilio Diaz also drove in Gomez on a sacrifice fly. “We came together as a team,” Lawndale assistant coach Frank Martinez said. “The kids ran great.” For Morningside, Gerardo Carrillo had two hits and two runs batted in. Roberto Ramirez had a two-run single and Leo Morales singled in a run. The Cardinals, who won an El Segundo Tournament game over host Mayfair 7-3 last Saturday in Lakewood, have two games with Hawthorne Math and Science Academy this week. After hosting the Aviators on Tuesday, Lawndale visits Hawthorne Math and Science at Holly Park Little League Field today at 3:15 p.m. The Cardinals, then, travel to Culver City for their 3:15 p.m. Ocean League opener next Tuesday. The Centaurs, who are one of the top contenders for the Ocean League crown, are led by Major League Baseball prospect and current UCLA commit pitcher Nolan Martinez. Morningside begins the Bay League against Peninsula High in Rolling Hills Estates this week. After visiting the Panthers on Wednesday, the Monarchs host Peninsula Friday at 3:15 p.m. Morningside, then, visits a 13-0 Redondo team next Wednesday at the same time. The Sea Hawks are the defending CIF-Southern Section Division III champions who were also ranked number-one in the poll as of last week. Local Hoopsters Vie in All-Stars Several prep boys’ and girls’ basketball players played in last Friday’s Annual South Bay All-Star Classic at South Torrance High. It started with the girls’ game that saw the Red team defeat the Blue stars 78-65. In the boys’ contest, it was the Blues that won a “Showtime” type contest over the Reds 141-129. The Blue stars led virtually the entire boys’ game that saw 28 players score with 15 of those in double figures. The Blues were led by Inglewood’s Jordan Bell with a game-high 22 points. His Sentinel teammate Chance Hunter added 10 for the winners. The Blues had nine players score in double figures. For the Reds, two other Inglewood standouts, Terrell Gomez and D’Angelo Smith each chipped in 18 points and were tied for the second on the team behind St. Bernard’s Julian Ross with 20. Ross helped the Vikings win the CIF-Southern California Division V championship over Rancho Christian from Temecula, a team that defeated St. Bernard for the Southern Section Division VA crown. St. Bernard lost to St. Joseph-Notre Dame from Alameda 55-50 in the California State Division V Championship on March 26 at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. Hawthorne’s Christian Brown also had a fine game with 13 points for the Reds. In the girls’ game for the Reds, Brianna Anderson (Hawthorne), Cheyenne Tannen (Leuzinger, eight points) and Taylor Hall (Lawndale, seven points) made good contributions. Local players on the Blues included Talia Jones (Hawthorne), Talia Ward (Lawndale) and Jalyn Riggs (Leuzinger).
