March 9, 2017 Page 3 Community Letter Let’s Embrace Our Similarities and Respect Our Differences As an Ahmadi Muslim, I am obligated to condemn any hate crime against another human being no matter where the victim resides.  I wholeheartedly condemn bomb threats and cemetery attacks at my fellow Jewish Americans and the killing of the Indian immigrant.  Islam teaches me that unconditional love toward another God’s creation has no ban and has no wall. In this divided time, intellectual dialogue to embrace our similarities and respect Community Briefs LESD Welcomes New Assistant Superintendent of Business Services In late August 2016, Lawndale Elementary School District (LESD) contracted with School Services of California Executive Search Team to conduct a search for an Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. These are the times when I’m happy to be City Clerk and not a Councilmember. A decision has to be made soon on how much longer my term will be. The Council must decide to extend our terms by one year or possibly shorten our terms by one year. The California Legislature passed a law requiring cities with low voter turnout to move their election to even numbered years and consolidate with the state elections. So, the city’s elections have been always on odd years and now they have to be held on even ones. That means either cancelling this year’s election and holding it next November or holding two elections in two years. Either way something has to give. It will cost the city approximately $80,000 to conduct an additional election in two consecutive years. There has been some public displeasure with the Council giving themselves an extra 12 months to govern. Since I’m an elected official, whatever the council decides to do will affect my term. I will serve whatever length of time they decide. I have tried not to make this column political. I have shied away from jumping into the muddy waters of politics. I believe God rules in two kingdoms, the earthly kingdom through government and the spiritual kingdom where grace, forgiveness and love are the rule for all believers. Should we be concerned about how our world is governed, yes? However, our spiritual wellbeing is of much more importance. A new heaven and a new earth await those who come to repentance and God’s saving grace is manifested through the work of Jesus Christ. I always pray for good, honest and fair leaders to lead us here on earth, but I put my trust in the only true God that can save me. No gold, silver or cases of cold ones are as valuable as my faith. So my dear friends, stop worrying about who our current national leader is, or whether our City Clerk is sober or not. Trust God and turn off the political talk shows and life will be much better. Then celebrate your worry free life! Business Expo The City of Hawthorne’s Business Expo 2017 is for you. It will be held on Wednesday, March 22nd from 3-7 p.m. at the Memorial Center.
