Santa Monica is the top ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division IA and is on the watch list for the prestigious Southern Section Open Division playoffs. Behind the hot shooting of also football standouts Chris Murray and Bryant Perkinson, the Cardinals took a 13-6 first quarter lead. On defense, Lawndale, which is 11-13 overall and 3-5 in the Ocean League, was effective on the Vikings’ standout Jonah Matthews, who will be joining former Cardinal standout center Chimeze Metu at University of Southern California in the fall, who was held to just three with 16 points. A.J. Gipson added 13 points and Murray chipped in 12. “I’m proud of my guys,” Lawndale head coach Patrick Marks, who replaced recent head mentor Christopher Brownlee, who was dismissed by the school’s administration due to an incident that occurred during a tournament it was involved in Sacramento shortly before Christmas, said. “Jonah’s a great player. “When he’s open, he can do anything. Our philosophy was to get him tired. He never does. Perkinson was also Ocean League triple jump champion in track and field last spring. The Cardinals had a very tough week having to face the top two teams in the Ocean. Lawndale traveled to Beverly Hills last Friday and was pinned with a 68-39 loss. The Cardinals have a critical final week. After visiting El Segundo last Tuesday, Lawndale closes Ocean play at home against Hawthorne tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Cards will need to win both of those games for an automatic spot in the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA playoffs. Lady Cardinals Win Two: Lawndale High’s girls’ basketball team remains in contention for an Ocean League title in a very close race after wins over Santa Monica and Beverly Hills last week. At Lawndale on February 3, the Cardinals downed the Vikings 41-24. At Beverly Hills last Friday, Lawndale defeated the Normans 59-40. Rejinae Crandall led the Cardinals, who improved to 6-2 in league and 16-8 overall, with a game-high 15 points against Santa Monica. Jazzmin Odei contributed 10 points. Lawndale visited El Segundo Tuesday. The Cardinals close league at home against Hawthorne tonight at 6 p.m. Lawndale defeated Hawthorne in an earlier league rivalry 44-23 on January 27 at Hawthorne. Lawndale Kickers Can’t Hold Samo: Lawndale High’s boys’ soccer team was unable to hold on to a 2-0 halftime lead and fell to Santa Monica 3-2 in overtime in Ocean League play on February 3. They showed a lot of heart.” Jasper Byrens scored the winning goal for the Vikings. Enrique McGary scored Santa Monica’s two goals in regulation, including the tying one with about two minutes left. At Beverly Hills last Friday, the Cardinals regrouped to edge the Normans 2-1. Estrada and Miranda each scored one goal. Lawndale visited league leading El Segundo in a critical game last Tuesday. The Cardinals host rival Hawthorne today at 3 p.m. Lawndale is currently in second place at 5-2-1. Local Gridders Sign: Six local football players signed to play at Major Division I colleges on February 3, which was the National Signing Day. Lawndale, which made it to the CIF-Southern Section Western Division quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Calabasas 33-7 on November 20, had three players sign. They included quarterback Chris Murray (Montana State), wide receiver-defensive back Bryant Perkinson (Sacramento State) and defensive back Jalen Walker (Boise State). Leuzinger, which finished third in the Pioneer League, had defensive end Semisi Lauaki sign at PAC 12 University of Utah. Morningside had two players sign.
