February 11, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ Valentine Appointed Back To Council Olivia Valentine was appointed to return to the City Council last Thursday evening. She will serve the remaining two years of the term that was vacated by Mayor Vargas. Ms. Valentine was first elected in 2011 to a four year term. She has brought new ideas and combined it with hard work to serve the city well the past four years. The council is now complete and looks forward to working together to bring about positive change in our city. Now, the real works begin. Now that the campaign is over. Now that we have new leadership that is committed to not fighting and bickering. We really need to move Hawthorne forward. With our neighbor to the North experiencing a renewal of sorts with a NFL stadium, it’s time for Hawthorne to join in on positive development that will make our citizens excited about living and working here. Hawthorne Hometown Pancake Breakfast The Hawthorne Historical Society will host their 2nd Annual Hawthorne Hometown Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, February 27 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Hawthorne Museum. The hot cakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee will all be ready for the large crowd that is expected. There will be plenty of good, neighborly conversation, music and raffles going on that morning. Come on down to 12622 S. Grevillea Avenue, right across from the County Library and enjoy the good times. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at the door. Business Expo Thursday, March 10 is the date set for Hawthorne’s Business Expo over at the Memorial Center. There will be plenty of networking to be done with representatives from diverse business backgrounds. Current business owners and those looking to start a business are all encouraged to attend the expo that will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. State of the City Luncheon The Chamber of Commerce will host the annual State of the City Luncheon on Thursday, March 24 with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Mayor Vargas will give us an update on what his vision for the city is. Tickets are $50. Please contact the Hawthorne Chamber for more information. Love is in the Air With our warm weather, it almost feels like Spring has sprung already. Flowers will be blooming soon. Candy, flowers and romance will all be in the air this Presidents Day weekend. If you have forgotten, Valentines Day is this Sunday. It’s a day when the average American spends $147 on their “sweetheart” to show them how much they love them. Is all of this necessary? Can money buy you a lasting, loving relationship? Expensive gifts or a high priced dinner out might bring about a little more affection, but the kind of love that lasts through thick and thin has to be deeper than a large debit on a credit card. God has given us the gift of love. We are blessed if we are in a loving relationship with someone special. It’s truly a gift that should be honored. Now that I have rationalized my way out of spending money to make my old lady happy, I better start looking for something to give her or she aint going to be a happy camper. No, a cold one won’t suffice. • Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper. Advertisements must be submitted in writing by mail, fax or email. You may pay by cash, check, or credit card (Visa or M/C over the phone). Errors: Please check your advertisements immediately. Any corrections and/or changes in an ad must be requested prior to the following Tuesday deadline in order to receive a credit. A credit will be issued for only the first time the error appears.
