If you like to decorate your home’s exterior for Christmas then plan to enter the contest. Entry forms are available at the Memorial Center or at City Hall. There will be awards given to first, second and third-place winners. Judging will take place on Dec. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. Citizen of the Year Award The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce held its 43 Annual Installation of Officers banquet last Friday. Along with installing the new board of directors, the Chamber handed out two civic awards. Thierry Lubenec was selected Hawthorne Citizen of the Year for 2013. Thierry has been the City Treasurer for the past 10 years. He was recognized for his involvement in many civic organizations and charitable causes. His volunteering and helpful attitude is legendary. He not only shows up, he usually takes charge whenever something needs to be done. At most events in the city, Thierry brings his entire family to volunteer as well. Mr. Lubenec is a very deserving choice as Citizen of the Year. David LaSalle was selected to receive the Ned Chaffee award for service to the Chamber. David has been a consistent leader in organizing and making sure that all the Chamber events and activities are run smoothly. Swearing In Along with the new mayor, city treasurer and two re-elected city council members, I was sworn in this past Tuesday as city clerk. We all took an oath. What does this mean? The literal definition of oath is “either a statement of fact or a promise calling upon something or someone that the oath maker considers sacred, usually God, as a witness to the binding nature of the promise. To swear is to take an oath, to make a solemn vow.” What did we all take a solemn vow to do? Here is the exact wording of the oath: "I, ______, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter.” Many people after taking the oath respond by saying, “So help me, God.” Yes, we all need God’s direction to help us lead our city.
