The Cougars began the First Annual Classic with a 74-68 loss to Marina High from Huntington Beach on December 1 and fell to the host Warriors 63-50 a day later. On December 3, Hawthorne got its first win of the season by crushing Port of Los Angeles High from San Pedro 98-33, then fell in the fifth place final to Crenshaw 71-58. Against Crenshaw, whose mascot is also the Cougars, Hawthorne was behind throughout virtually the entire game. Crenshaw (2-2) took a 20-13 first quarter lead and led by as many as 14 points (29-15) in the second period. Leading 35-28 at halftime, Crenshaw steadily pulled away and won handily. “We missed too many lay-ups,” Hawthorne head coach David Gray said on Hawthorne’s loss to Crenshaw. “We mentally broke down.” Hawthorne managed to get balanced scoring, led by Christian Brown with 10 points. Curry Aksquin added nine points and Marquel Grey and Chigbo Anakpain each chipped in eight. Crenshaw’s Chris Kendrick led all scorers with 23 points. In Hawthorne’s easy win over Port of L.A. (0-4), the Cougars scored 64 first half points to 19 for the POLA. The Cougars continued to pour it on by outscoring Port of L.A. 33-14 in the second half. Michael Blackwell and Brown shared Hawthorne’s high scoring honors with 14 points apiece. Cesar Orasco contributed 10 points as all Cougars scored. Grey led the Cougars with 17 points in their loss to West (2-2). Dayvian Lee led Hawthore with 18 points in its loss to Marina. Bruce Hegan and Sal Tai each put in 10 points. The Cougars are currently playing in the Artesia Tournament in Lakewood where they opened against Claremont last Monday. Hawthorne also faced Corona on Tuesday and will visit Costa Mesa in a non-league game Friday at 7 p.m. The Cougars will play in the Westminster Tournament from next Monday through December 20. Leuzinger Goes 1-2 at Rose City Leuzinger High’s boys’ basketball team went 1-2 in last week’s Rose City Classic at Maranatha High in Arcadia. The Olympians’ only win came against St. Anthony High from Long Beach 59-45 last Thursday. Keying the Olympians was Davion Crowder with 21 points. Christian Odiona tallied 14 points. Last Friday, Leuzinger fell short of Cajon from San Bernardino 74-68. Crowder had a big game with 27 points. A bad first quarter plagued the Olympians as the Cowboys scored 32 points to 16 for Leuzinger. The Olympians managed to outscore Cajon 25-20 in the fourth period but fell short. On December 2, Leuzinger lost to Oak Park 51-49. Leuzinger led by four (39-35) after three quarters but Oak Park came back to outscore the Olympians 16-10 in the fourth period to pull off the two-point win. Davante Carr led Leuzinger with 15 points. The Olympians are currently playing in the Beverly Hills Tournament where they began last Monday against Santa Monica. The classic runs through Saturday. Lady Cardinals Fal in Final Lawndale High’s girls’ basketball team was unable to defend its South El Monte Tournament after suffering a 50-37 loss to Martin Luther King High from Riverside last Saturday. Rajanae Crandell sparked Lawndale with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the losing effort. She was named to the all-tournament team. In the championship semifinals a day earlier, the Cardinals downed West Ranch from Valencia 61-50. Lawndale led throughout most of the game in the win. Last Thursday in the championship quarterfinals, the Cardinals defeated Eagle Rock 43-37. Lawndale used an 18-5 second quarter that proved to be the difference. Leuzinger Girls Win Two Leuzinger High’s girls’ basketball team won two of four games in last week’s Brentwood Tournament. On December 2, the Lady Olympians defeated Venice 80-65. A day later, Leuzinger fell to West Los Angeles Marymount 67-54. Last Thursday, Leuzinger topped Beverly Hills 64-60 but on Friday, the Olympians fell to Inglewood St. Mary’s Academy 61-56. Leuzinger hosted crosstown rival Lawndale in a non-league game on Wednesday. The Olympians begin the Pioneer League at home against defending CIF-Southern Section Division IIA champion West Torrance on January 14 at 6 p.m. Inglewood is Winless Inglewood High’s girls’ basketball team fell to 0-4 with Downey Tournament losses to Sunny Hills and South Gate South East last week. The Sentinels fell to Sunny Hills 52-22 on December 1 and South East 53-39 on December 3. Inglewood opens the Ocean View High Tournament against North Torrance tonight at 7 p.m. in Huntington Beach. • Crenshaw during last Thursday’s fifth place game of the West Coast Shores Tournament.
