This is the email current users of Nextdoor received from the Hawthorne Police Department: “We are pleased to announce that starting October 31, the Hawthorne Police Department will be utilizing Nextdoor to facilitate virtual neighborhood watch and foster  neighbor-toneighbor communications.

Nextdoor is a tool for us to effectively share information on crime prevention and safety, public events, and emergency notifications. You can expect to receive local crime and safety updates from the HPD on Nextdoor.

Please be assured that your website remains PRIVATE. HPD staff will NOT be able to see any of the content on your neighborhood website except for the direct replies to our posts.

Please be aware that Nextdoor is not the appropriate way to request emergency services, police services, report criminal or suspicious activity, file a report, etc. If you require emergency services, please call 911.

We look forward to connecting with you on Nextdoor to build stronger, safer neighborhoods throughout ---Community Affairs Unit
Hawthorne PD” I registered today for Nextdoor and it was easy. I live in the Ramona tract so there were already 100 neighbors signed up for Nextdoor. I surfed around the site and found some interesting posts. If you are computer suave, then you will not have any trouble logging on and staying informed as to what is going on in your neighborhood. On-line Park and Recreation Registration The City of Hawthorne also announces that now you can register on line for any of the classes or workshops that the parks and recreation department offers throughout the year. Now you don’t have to drive over to the Memorial Center to pay for swimming lessons. You don’t have to go and get a form to fill out to sign your child up for youth basketball. It is all on line. You can make your registration payments online also. Did You Vote? Less than half of the registered California voters were expected at the polls this past Tuesday. It is sad that so many people stay away from voting except for voting every four years for the president. There are so many other positions that are just as important as electing our president. The direction of our city, county, state are all decided upon during these general elections. As city clerk, I encourage everyone to take an interest in their government, be involved and VOTE. Veterans Day The vets wanted their holiday to stay on November 11. So, this year we have a rare Tuesday holiday. If you know a vet, express your gratitude for what they have done for our country. The sacrifices that these men and women have made by placing country ahead of self, is something to really celebrate. We can not honor them enough. City Hall and most other government offices will be closed that day. Historical Society to Meet The next meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be on Monday, November 17 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Museum located at 12622 S. Grevillea Avenue. It is located across the parking lot from the mail public library. We will be having a guest speaker and discussing the start of our efforts to catalog the historical landmarks, building, signs and other historical locations. We want to help preserve our heritage in the City of Good Neighbors. Santa is Coming to Hawthorne Saturday, December 6 is the date for Santa to arrive in Hawthorne at the Hometown Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting to be held at the civic center. Kids, young and old alike, are invited to attend. It’s always fun to see the young kids faces light up when Santa arrives. Just in Case you Missed the Sports News On the sports front, my SF Giants captured their third world series championship in the past five years. The Lakers are still winless. USC and UCLA football teams are heading towards their annual showdown as the highlight of their seasons. Neither team will be going to a major bowl game this year. It’s still fun to watch college sports for the unpredictability of each game. Thanksgiving is Coming Just three weeks before we get to dig into the turkey feast. There are many organizations gathering food to feed the less fortunate. This time of the year is a time for giving. We have so much to be thankful for. Maybe find a needy neighbor and help them out in a small way. I know they would appreciate it. • A Show of Seasons Winter winds drive dainty petals through time, Leaving livid and sloppy spring gardens behind. Summer storms exhale as roasting poppies pant. Autumn crocus craves what fall forests grant. - poem by elaine c. simon elainecs65@yahoo.com
