October 23, 2014 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Shredding Event- E-Roundup Do you have documents that you need to be securely shredded? Do you have old computers or televisions you wish to get out of your closet or garage? This Saturday is the day you can get your house cleaned up for the holidays. Our annual Shredding Event and E-Roundup will be held this Saturday, October 25 at the Hawthorne City Hall from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. In addition to all of this, Republic Services is offering free earthquake kit barrels to all who wish to get ready for the “big one”. Finally, there will be compost available for you gardeners who want to prepare their gardens and lawns for the winter. Sounds like you can take care of a lot of “honeydo” list jobs all at one time. Election Day is Coming You have heard it all before, “every vote counts”, “don’t complain if you don’t vote”, “the ballot box is the only way to change things”. But, it seems like we have trouble getting motivated to vote. Maybe because we really never seem to see any change. Every one of our state and national officials that represent Hawthorne are of the same political party. Our representatives tend to vote right down party lines. Still, there are reasons to go to the polls. There are state measures that will affect us. From water issues to healthcare, many of the measures we are voting on will have long term affects on California. Take the time to read your voting booklet. Get out to vote or mail in your vote by November 4th. Here Come the Holidays Once we hit the end of October we have entered the “holiday season”. Halloween seems to be the popular start to the end of the year shopping season. The “hallowed eve” is used to scare all the bad spirits away, just in time for All Saints Day on November 1 or the Day of the Dead that many people celebrate now in Southern California. The veterans groups made sure that Veterans Day is always celebrated right on November 11th, even if it does fall on a Tuesday like this year. After that Thanksgiving sneaks up on us really quick. Black Friday sales are beginning the afternoon and day of Thanksgiving now, so maybe we should call it Black Thursday/Friday. Patience with Blvd Small businesses depend on customers coming in to buy their products or services each day. The contractor in charge of the construction work being done on Hawthorne Blvd. is doing all they can to have the businesses stay open during construction. Some sidewalks have been torn out in one day and poured the next day. Many people are trying to decide if they like the new look or not. It’s too early to tell. We all need patience and wait until the job is completed before jumping to conclusions. There will be a lot of “people friendly” features to the new look once the project is completed. The projected completion date was nine months after ground breaking. That would put us into March of 2015. The work is ahead of schedule and may be completed before that time. World Series Should I apologize to my friends who are Dodger fans? Should I feel sorry for the Los Angeles fans who have suffered through a lot lately? I’m sorry, but I just happen to be a San Francisco Giant fan. I grew up in Crescent City, which is located in the very extreme northwest corner of California. In the 1960’s I would listen to the baseball games with Willie Mays and Willie McCovey leading the Giants to what seemed like second place every year right behind the Dodgers who had Kofax and Drysdale. If you grow up with a team, it’s hard not to pull for them all of your life. We used to play home run derby in our back yard and pretend to be the Giants winning the World Series. Now, the Giants seem to have figured out how to win it all. They may be closing in on their third world championship this weekend. I might even have a cold one to celebrate another title. Don’t Trash Our City Last week I didn’t write a column and several people said they missed it. One of my readers commented that the City of Hawthorne’s motto of being Good Neighbors is not always true on her block with people constantly throwing their trash on the sidewalks and streets. She lives by a school and the kids tend to let their wrappers fly also. Let’s take pride in our city. Don’t trash Hawthorne.
