The Olympians begin their season against Morningside Friday at Coleman Stadium wide receiver Darren Morgan, junior wide receiver Patrick Jeune and senior athletes Adarrus and Charles Akanno. The Monarchs also hope to get some help from Jaylin Wright and six-foot-four senior Jerome Roseborough, who transferred from cross town rival Inglewood. On defense, Morningside will be led by Akanno and speedy senior defensive back Aaron Berry, both all- Bay Leaguers. Berry is also a standout track and field athlete for the Monarchs. Jeune and Wilson are also key defensive players. Fletcher feels that the Monarchs figure to contend in the Bay, a league led by league power and defending Southern Section Western By Joe Snyder Photo by Joe Snyder The 2015 prep football season kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. between Leuzinger and host Morningside at Coleman Stadium in Inglewood. Last season, both teams finished 4-6 overall with the Olympians going 1-4 in the highly competitive Torrance-school studded Pioneer League and the Monarchs going 0-5 in the rugged Bay League after a 4-1 non-league slate. Leuzinger should have a mostly experienced line but its skilled positions face rebuilding. Perhaps the top returning starter for the Olympians is senior defensive lineman-tight end Semesi Lauaki, who was a first team all- Pioneer selection. Lauaki is being scouted by several Major Division I colleges, including UCLA, University of Utah and Boise State. “He did real well in summer competitions and we’ll see how he does in the fall,” Leuzinger head coach Damian Porter said of Lauaki. Also back is senior linebacker Adrian Galera, a third year starting varsity player, along with another all-leaguer in senior offensive lineman-defensive end Amad Taylor. Another all-Pioneer player is senior running back Lionel Smith. According to Porter, sophomore outside linebacker Loren Bowen and junior offensive lineman Bethel Perez had a very good offseason. Porter is also impressed with senior middle linebacker Edgar Mijares, who started seven games for Leuzinger last year. “I expect big things from him,” Porter said of Mijares. “He’s stronger and faster.” The Olympians will be rather young and inexperienced at skilled positions. Juniors Jeremiah Smith, a part-time starter last year, and Antonio Haygood, a transfer from Los Angeles Jefferson High, are top candidates. Leuzinger will be inexperience in the receiving positions. “It’s a mixture of youth and experience,” Porter said of the team. “We should be very good up front but young and inexperienced in the skilled positions.” The Olympians start Pioneer play at defending league champion and Western Division semifinalist West Torrance on October 9 at 7 p.m. Fletcher Hopes to Bring Monarchs Back Up After the last two seasons with Derwin Henderson, Lafayette Fletcher returned to head coach Morningside High’s football team. Fletcher spent a total of 25 seasons as head and assistant coach for the Monarchs before leaving in the 2010 season after a 1-9 record. His best as head mentor was in 2003 when Morningside advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Northwestern Conference final where it lost at Lompoc. The Monarchs should have a respectful offense with six returning starters but did lose running back Christian Williams to graduation. Last season, Williams rushed for 1,840 yards and 15 touchdowns. Leading Morningside’s offense will be senior quarterback Travian McGee, senior center Jose Mejia, senior all-Bay League Division Palos Verdes, Redondo (which returns most of its top starters from last year’s league runner-up and Western Division quarterfinalist squad) and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa. Morningside begins the Bay at Peninsula in Rolling Hills Estates on October 9 at 3 p.m. Skylanders Go Unbeaten The Skylanders finished the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League Division I (ages 6-7) with an unbeaten 10-0 record after topping the Matadors 18-12 Saturday at the Betty Ainsworth Gymnasium. Zi Williams sparked the Skylanders with five points. Sarnay Matthews added four points and Joseph James chipped in three. Ryan Hendrix and Neal Smith shared the Matadors’ high scoring honors with four points apiece. Rockers Edge Knights; Hard Work Wins Division The Rockers finished second in the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Division I play with a 7-5 win over the Knights on Saturday. Jordan Edwards led the Rockers with a game-high four points. Williams Wright sparked the Knights with three points. The Hard Work won the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Division IV (ages 12-13) regular season title at 7-3 after downing Shut Em Down 50-36 on Saturday. Amir Mayied led Hard Work with 12 points, followed by Kevin Elleby with 10. Kevin Hamilton led Shut Em Down (2-8) with 12 points and Dorian Paymore finished with eight. Warriors Top Shut Em Down The Warriors held on to defeat Shut Em Down 53-48 in Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball Division IV action Saturday. Garry Harris led the Warriors’ balanced scoring attack with nine points. Tayay Hope had six points. Anthony Thompson and Michael Harron each put in five. Nile Alredge led all scorers with 21 points for Shut Em Down. Andy Alvarez tallied 18 points. • PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLISH YOUR PUBLIC NOTICES HERE ABANDONMENTS: $125.00 ABC NOTICES: $125.00 DBA (Fictitious Business Name): $75.00 NAME CHANGE: $125.00 Other type of notice?
