This recognition program is being started with the goal of preserving the past and commemorating the individuals and businesses who have had an impact on the Hawthorne community. By honoring these people we hope to pass on their spirit of civic dedication and creative achievement so that future generations might be inspired to serve their community and pursue their American dreams. The four inaugural inductees into the Hawthorne Hall of Fame include: Adolph Leuzinger, Jack Northrop, Hal Chauncey, and Chris Montez. The Hawthorne business inductee is Hawthorne Nursery. Celebrate Hawthorne Banquet On Friday, July 18, the Hawthorne Historical Society will be honoring these inductees at a “Celebrate Hawthorne” Hall of Fame Banquet. The banquet will include the Hall of Fame presentations, and a premiere screening of the video, “Hawthorne Rocks”- the musical history of Hawthorne. The inductees or a family member will be present at the banquet to accept their special honor. The cost of the banquet is $25. The menu includes tri-tip steak. If you are interested in attending you can email me or hawthornehistorical@gmail.com. For more information please call the new number for the Historical Society at 310-956-9647. (On that same day the HHS is offering historical tours of Hawthorne. The ninety minute tour will take you to sites where the Beach Boys, Marilyn Monroe and Jack Northrop all started their claims to fame.) Reflecting on Father’s Day Life in America is changing every day. Due to the changing world we live in things like cursive writing, writing of bank checks, land line home phones, and the learning of the keyboard for typing are all becoming obsolete. We are doing everything via the internet or in something called a “cyber cloud”. Just this week, Starbucks announced that their employees can take colleges courses online and Starbucks will cover their tuition. The student will no longer have to travel to the college campus and sit in front of a professor and take notes. Even with all of this innovation, there are things that can not be replaced by technology. The FATHER’s role in nurturing their children is one of these things that is priceless. A computer can not teach a son to throw a baseball or catch a football. A cell phone app can not give a daughter a hug and tell them she is “my little princess”. There is no better way for a child to be given the love and care they need to grow and mature than to have both a mother and father in the home. I look at my children as gifts from God. I try to love them like God loves me, always forgiving and always looking out for their good. The greatest job we have as men is to love our wives and our children. So, turn off your cell phone and spend time showing your son or daughter how to swing a golf club. Safe and Sane Fireworks Helps Nonprofits I have not heard as many “illegal fireworks” going off in my neighborhood yet this month. In years past, they would start setting them off beginning around Memorial Day and continue to well after the 4th of July. Beginning June 27th, there will be “safe and sane” fireworks for sale at eight locations in Hawthorne. The sale of safe fireworks is a life saver for many of our Hawthorne service organizations. Without this income they would not be able to give back to the community by providing scholarship, free programs and food assistance. Let’s hope we have more “sane people” who purchase safe fireworks and less crazies who ruin the holiday for all of us. Rocket Plaza Set to Take Off Plans are being drawn up to make a one block street off of Hawthorne Blvd at 129th Street a nice relaxing “get away” named “Rocket Plaza”. The street will no longer allow cars and will include park benches, green areas, and allow for outdoor dining for the adjacent restaurants. Historical Society to Meet The next meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society is set for Monday, June 30 beginning at 6:30 p.m. You are invited to a short historical video and presentation and some refreshments. The Society meets at the Hawthorne Museum.
