June 12 2014 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Flag Day – Pancakes – Basketball This Saturday is a busy day here in Hawthorne. Remember that it is Flag Day. Fly your red, white and blue flag proudly. Then the Holly Park Homeowners Association will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast as a fundraiser for their scholarship fund. This year the breakfast will be held at Olivet Lutheran Church located at 2506 W. Imperial Highway, in Hawthorne. Serving hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Then beginning at 9 a.m., Councilmen Alex Vargas will be hosting his fourth annual Unity 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at the Betty Ainsworth Center Gymnasium located at 3901 W. El Segundo Blvd. I guess I better not eat too many pancakes if I want to surviving playing a game or two of b-ball. Hawthorne Blvd Remodel I’ve been asked to give people an idea of how our boulevard will look when the work has been completed. It’s very hard to describe it in words. Some of the features being integrated into the project include diagonal curbside parking for business customers, dedicated bike lanes, green areas with benches, well-lit crosswalks and covered bus stop areas for commuters who use the public transit. If you have driven down the boulevard lately you can see that the traffic lanes will be reconfigured with no parking spaces in the median. Everything should be completed by the end of this year or the first part of 2015. Each month another block or two will be worked on. We look forward to a whole new look to our main thoroughfare. Hawthorne Hall of Fame Inductees Selected The 2014 inductees of the first-ever Hawthorne Hall of Fame have been selected. The names of the inductees will be soon announced. They include some of the real “founding fathers” of the Hawthorne community. The Hawthorne Historical Society’s Hall of Fame selection committee looked first to honor those people who had a dramatic affect on the community either through their community service, their business leadership, or their outstanding professional achievements. The five people selected will be honored at the Good Neighbors Day events on the weekend of July 18-19. The list of Hall of Fame nominations is very impressive for one small city here in SoCal. I still would put our celebrity list up against any city our size or even larger in all of America as far as the most influential group of American dreamers and achievers. Call it coincidental or just plain luck, but Hawthorne really has been a “hot spot of Americana”. Role Reversal It used to be that the Lakers were always playing for a NBA title about this time of the year and the LA Kings were out playing golf. Now, it’s just the opposite. At the time of this writing, the Kings are on the verge of their second Stanley Cup championship in three years and the Lakers are looking for a new coach. Even with the high payroll of some professional sports teams, it still takes the right chemistry that allows a team to work together to reach their goals. Futball Takes Center Stage Forget about the NBA, NHL or MBL, the world’s sport is futball, better know to us as soccer. The World Cup is the biggest single most coveted prize in all of team sports. Entire nations have been known to rise or fall with the fates of their national soccer team. Billions of people will be watching the games from Brazil which begin today. The Olympic Games is one of respectful, international competition. The World Cup is more like a world war involving 32 national armies. The USA must survive playing against Germany, Portugal and Ghana in the first round. If they survive and move on, then the competition gets even more intense. Only one out of 32 nations gets to hold the Cup high following the month long “war”. Graduation Time All three of our comprehensive high schools will conduct graduation ceremonies on Thursday, June 19th . Hawthorne, Leuzinger and Lawndale high schools will all send off their graduating seniors on that same day. Congratulations to all of our graduates. Inglewood Unified is among 11 grant recipients receiving awards of up to $600,000. The District plans to use the money to design an engineering pathway for IUSD students through Project Lead the Way (PLTW). “PLTW Engineering is more than just another high school engineering program. It is about applying  engineering, science, math and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context,” said Jim Garza, Inglewood Unified’s executive director of Secondary Support Services. “Students focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the ‘right’ answer. They learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.”   In a statement, Superintendent Torlakson said that to make good on the state’s goal of providing a world-class education for every California student, graduates must have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the real world. “By demonstrating the relevance of students’ education, these programs not only encourage kids to stay in school, but also combine the rigorous academics and practical experience employers say they need,” he said. The California Career Pathways Trust and the one-time competitive grant program were established by AB 86 and signed into law in July 2013. • Enjoy a good read with your morning coffee...
