June 11, 2015 Page 5 Local Teams Contend for Magee Title By Joe Snyder Photo by Joe Snyder The Carl Magee Jr. District 37 Tournament of Champions began on May 30 which the beginning of a road of Little League Baseball and Softball Playoff Tournaments that will last throughout the summer. The All-Stars are expected to begin with the District 37 Tournaments on June 20 at various sites. In Major Baseball, the Holly Park Angels from Hawthorne played the Westchester Cardinals last Sunday with the winner continuing to play in the winner’s bracket today at 6 p.m. at Carl Nielsen Youth Sports Park in Westchester and the loser having on Saturday at the same time at Holly Park. The Angels began the tournament with a 10-5 win over the Tri Park Braves on May 30 and the Lennox Dodgers 6-1 a day later. The Angels, then, defeated the Compton 10-5 on June 2. As of June 3, the Holly Park Yankees are unbeaten in two games with wins over the Hawthorne Wiseburn Dodgers 14-2 and the Del Rey Mariners 13-5 a day later. The Holly Park Dodgers opened with a 2-1 win over Del Rey on May 30, then defeated another Del Rey team 5-1 on May 31. In the 50-70 (ages 11-13) Division, Wiseburn and Lawndale played in the first game of the championship series last Sunday but results were unavailable. Wiseburn already downed Lawndale 5-2 on May 31. Lawndale opened the tournament by shutting out Tri Park 7-0 on May 30. The games are at Jim Thorpe Park in Hawthorne. Also at Thorpe Park, the Lennox Phillies were to face the Inglewood Sportsman Angels in a winner’s bracket game of the Junior (ages 13-14) baseball game last Monday. The Phillies have wins over Compton (4-2 on May 31) and the Holly Park Red Sox (9-1 on June 2). Sportsman topped Lennox 4 (7-4 on May 31) and the Lennox Diablos (score unavailable) on June 2. The Diablos and the Red Sox are still in the loser’s bracket. In Senior Baseball, Lennox swept both openers on May 30. Lennox 2 defeated Aviation 7-3 and the Titans rolled over the Lawndale Pirates 17-3. In Minor (ages 9-10) Baseball, the Westchester Rockies and the Holly Park Reds are both unbeaten. Holly Park began with a 16-4 rout of Compton on May 30, then topped the Westchester Yankees 15-11 a day later. The Reds, then, outlasted the Westchester Braves 7-6 on June 2 and the rival Bluejays on June 3. Holly Park hosted last Sunday’s showdown. Last Friday in Minor Baseball loser’s bracket games, the Tri Park Red Sox and Westchester Yankees rolled to easy fourinning mercy rule victories. Tri Park blanked the Sportsman Angels 15-0 and the Yankees routed the Lennox Tigers 18-0. In Tri Park’s win, Alex Rodriguez went two-for-two with three runs scored. Jacob Cordona had two doubles and drove in four runs. Adam Godinez added a two-run single and Adrian Santeccan was two-for-two with two runs batted in. The Tournament of Champions will last into next week. St. Mary’s Relay Places Fifth St. Mary’s Academy’s girls’ track and field team from Inglewood had some athletes, including its 4x100-meter relay team, involved in last Friday and Saturday’s California State Championships at Buchanan High School’s Memorial Stadium in Clovis. Its 400 relay squad of Anaiah Brown, Aluijah Hale, Briana Shufford and Keshawna Myles finished fifth at 46.66 seconds in the finals on Saturday. Winning the race was Westlake Village Oaks Christian, clocking 45.66. Placing second through fourth, in order, were Gardena Serra (45.82), Upland (46.07) and host Buchanan (46.5). The Belles had two athletes who were eliminated in Friday’s Prelims. Hale took 13th overall in the 300 hurdles in 43.66 and Kyra Anderson was 14th overall in the 100 hurdles timing 14.54. The top nine overall finishers advanced to the finals. Senior Jasmyne Graham from Eastvale Roosevelt won both hurdles. She captured the 100 in 13.17 and the 300 clocking 40.73. Both of those times were among the tops in the United States this year. Oaks Christian, which won the 4x100 relay, also won the girls’ state team championship with 34 points. Winning the state boys’ crown was Vista Murrieta, behind premiere sprinter Michael Norman, with 48 points. Norman, ranked among the top junior (ages 19 and under) sprinters in the world and one of the best prepsters of all time, recorded the top junior time in the world at 20.3 seconds in the 200 and is ranked third in the world in the 400 after a time of 45.19. Just a junior, Norman will be looking at being the first prep sprinter to break 20 seconds in the 200 and 45 in the 400 for next season and could, right out of high school, have a shot at a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
