If you have noticed that some of the trees on Hawthorne Boulevard have been cut down and removed then you may be wondering what is going on. Well, over the next nine months you will see a lot more things happening to our main thoroughfare. $11,000,000 is being spent on the Hawthorne Boulevard Renovation Project. Most all of the monies have come from the City of Hawthorne’s Public Works Department winning competitive grants. One of the decisive factors of coming out ahead of other bidding cities was the fact that we included bicycle lanes and green spaces in the project. The politically favorable trend is to do all we can to provide alternate modes of transportation to that of the automobile. So, bike lanes and pedestrian friendly crosswalks are to be prominent in the project. Curb side parking for easier shopping is one of the main features also. On parts of the boulevard, there will be no more parking in the median. This will be a drastic, historical change since the railway and street cars were the reason for the large median strip going down the center of our city. The railway was built in the early 1900’s even before city hood. Hawthorne’s median parking lot once was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest parking lot accommodating over 4,000 cars. So much for history, let the work begin. Let’s look forward. Let’s watch to see how it all turns out. Hawthorne 5K Run and Health Fair This Saturday The Hawthorne Education Foundation annually sponsors a 5K Fun Run and Health Fair. There will be over 1,000 kids and adults at the starting line behind the Memorial Center this Saturday, May 10 So, get going to sign up for the 5K. The registration fee is $25 cash only on the day of the race. You receive a free tee shirt and a metal for participating. If I can make it three miles at my advanced age, then you younger folk can make it also. Walkers are welcome. Service Provider Fair and Earth Day Councilwoman Angie Reyes English will be hosting her 5th Annual Service Provider Fair on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Center. Earth Day celebrations will be going on along with the Provider Fair. The fair will feature various service provider booths, emergency preparedness information and promotional giveaways. Every year hundreds of Hawthorne residents get valuable information at the fair. Community BBQ K-9 Dinner The Annual Community BBQ K-9 Dinner will be held on Thursday, May 22 from 5 to 6:45 p.m. at the Memorial Center. The tickets are still only $5 per adult and $2.50 for children. It’s a great chicken dinner, the K-9 squad shows up, and a raffle is held each time. (Some people seem to be luckier at these raffles than I am. No matter how many tickets I purchase, I never seem to win. Don’t feel sorry for me, I don’t mind being a non-winner. It all goes to a good cause.) Historical Society The next open meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held on Monday, May 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Museum. Good Neighbors Day will be held on Saturday, July 19 featuring a performance by Chris Montez. Commission Openings We are still looking for people to serve on two city commissions. One is the Seniors Commission and the other the Veterans Commission. Please contact the City Clerks Office for an application. Another Year May 8th is my birthday. I turn 59 this year. Yes, the older you get the faster the years seem to go by. Yes, I’m getting old. Yes, looking back, life seems short. Yes, my grey hair seems to be getting even greyer. We can either be depressed about getting old, or we can look at each day as a gift from God. Every day is another opportunity to enjoy life and especially enjoy our good times with friends and family. How much better can it be than to share a round of golf, a good meal, a cup of coffee, or a nice, cold beer with a friend or with your family? The best birthdays are when you are surrounded by people you love and have something good to put in your belly. Why wait to celebrate your birthday? Celebrate everyday, have a “cold one”! (Thanks for reading my column.) • School Spotlight Highland Elementary Honored as California Distinguished School By Kristin Agostoni for IUSD Inglewood Unified's Highland Elementary has been named a California Distinguished School, a distinction given to top public elementary schools around the state that have made strides in narrowing the student achievement gap.
