Page 2 May 21, 2015 Three Hawthorne Officers Letters Received Medals of Valor Hawthorne Citizens Deserve Better Hawthorne’s Mayor and two city councilwomen are again showing their true colors when it comes to being fiscally and ethically responsible. At the May 12th Hawthorne City Council meeting, Councilwoman Valentine stated they (the council) are “perfectly capable of policing (themselves) and using city funds judiciously.” Really? This majority voting bloc seems to only know how to excessively spend on themselves as evidenced by the recent financial scandals attributed to Mayor Brown. Other governing bodies are required to seek approval for trips and conferences. Hawthorne’s mayor and council should be no different. That would be true transparency. The people have yet to see any positive outcomes from these trips and junkets that benefit the citizens. To add misery to insult, Councilwoman Valentine also asked for support of a California State bill which would lower the voting threshold to 55% from the current two thirds required to pass more taxes on to the people for use on transportation projects. The dissent from the citizens and Councilpersons Michelin and Vargas was loud and clear, yet she continued to push and try to justify making it easier to impose more taxation on the taxpayers in a state and city that has been less than responsible when it comes to managing our money. Our income is not going up, Hawthorne has the highest unemployment rate in the area, our poverty rate is also among the highest and yet these clueless politicians want more.
